In our Family Medicine residency program, residents will participate in a number of learning activities focused on Indigenous Health. The first happens right away during orientation!

The Central Family stream is unique, in that there are four main sites that residents are split amongst to do their core family medicine rotations. Gander and Grand Falls Windsor are where residents complete off service rotations in first year. Each offers excellent broad scope practice with its own unique features!
Twillingate: combination of clinic, lots of (busy) emergency shifts, hospitalist, and long term care housed in the Notre Dame Bay Memorial Health Centre.
Gander: clinic, hospitalist, and optional emerge shifts. The James Paton Memorial Heath Centre is an orthopaedic surgery hub where all residents complete their ortho block. Some residents also complete off service rotations like general surgery, paediatrics, and emergency medicine here.
Botwood: combination of clinic, emerge day time shifts, and long term care housed in the Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Centre.
Grand Falls Windsor: robust GP Obs group, clinic, hospitalist, and opportunity for emerge, care of the elderly, and palliative care experiences. The Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre is a thriving teaching hospital, where all residency do obstetrics/gynaecology and internal medicine blocks. Some residents also complete general surgery, paediatrics, and emergency medicine blocks here as well.

Hi! My name is Allison Best, and I’m an R1 in the Central Family stream based out of Twillingate.
I grew up on Fogo Island, home to around 2200 people. My background is in nursing, and I worked as an RN briefly before starting medical school at MUN. I love rural medicine and rural living, so I’m thrilled to be able to learn and live so close to home in Central Newfoundland!
I am a big fan of ferry boats (think Derek Sheppard but less neurosurgery), hiking (I love getting up high to get a better look at things), hanging out with my friends and family, and exploring the small communities of NL.
I’ve wanted to be a family doctor ever since high school, and I’m so happy to learn from some of the best here in Central NL. It’s always been important to me to give back to rural communities like the one I was raised in through the practice of broad scope family medicine.
If you have any questions at all about rural family medicine or the Central Family stream, I’d love to help! You can follow or message me if you’d like to connect ☺️
What has really helped me while being away from home has been the work life balance. I love the ability to join pick up soccer, volleyball and badminton every week at the community centre which allows for my changing work schedule! My favourite discovery has to be trivia on Tuesday nights, it’s been a new way for me to have fun and meet new people! Ive really gotten the chance to appreciate the nature here given the central location of our sites. With an airport near by I’ve gotten to keep my own interests of international travel, visiting my family regularly. But the best part has been, getting the chance to explore all the trails and outdoor activities central has to offer. The Nature here is beautiful, throughout all the seasons and everyone has been so kind to offer their time AND EVEN their own equipment to let you enjoy and explore, so do it! Central is a great way to get rural experience while still having plenty of amenities to avail of, so please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!
Hi everyone!
My name is Karin and I’m an R2 in Central based out of Gander!
As an IMG I’ve felt very well supported and trained throughout my residency and wanted to come on here to share a bit of how my day to day life looks like! If you're an IMG and have any questions feel free to reach out.
In terms of what it's like to train here, the best thing is that your schedule can be as fixed or as ever-changing as you want! I appreciate that all our on-calls are from home (until you get called in). But over all, I usually do clinics in the morning with a half day weekly to see our patients in long term care. I get the chance to do house calls and it’s been a great exposure for palliative care and caring for patients in different settings. Our preceptors will do dedicated weeks as hospitalists so you get to get on board and follow through your set of admitted patients. Lastly family doctors here do OR assist, double coverage in the ED and cancer clinic so picking up clinics or days to fit your interests and embellish your experiences makes training in central so valuable! If you're interested in obstetrics, our Grand Falls - Windsor site has a FM-OB group which would incorporate your exposure to obstetrics throughout your residency.
