Dear Students,
For this year's Aldrich Conference Opening Ceremony, we will be joined by our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Max Liboiron, an Associate Professor in Geography and the Founder/Director of the Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR).
Talk Title: Theories of Change in Tight Places
Talk Summary: How do we build the tools, practices, and infrastructures we need for a more just world when our spaces are already defined by colonial land relations, sexism, ableism, and racism, among other dominant structures? In this short talk, Dr. Liboiron introduces the idea of infrastructure as central to any meaningful change, paired with the concept of “compromise” not as a failure, but as a condition of doing ethical work within uneven power relations. They will end with an example of doing research in partnerships where power relations will never be even.
Opening Ceremony Webex links will be emailed to all who register; to register, please go to https://forms.gle/SGBBaDKrtH6PcYFE6

Dear students,
Do you know the history behind the nomenclature of Aldrich Conference? 🤔
"The Aldrich Interdisciplinary Conference is held each year in memory of Dr. Frederick A Aldrich. Dr. Aldrich was the first Dean of Graduate Studies at Memorial University back in 1970 and he held this position until 1987. He was born in New Jersey in 1927. He attended Rutgers University, where he earned his doctorate.
Dr. Aldrich was a prominent Marine Biologist and Educator. He began his career with Memorial University as an Associate Professor of Biology in 1961. He became the Head of the Department of Biology in 1963. Also, he became the first Director of the Marine Sciences Research Laboratory at Logy Bay in 1967.
He is best remembered for his research on giant squid. The squid species Australiteuthis aldrichi is named after him. That's why the logo of Aldrich Conference is a giant squid 🦑
