A technique being refined by researchers in Thunder Bay that provides razor sharp images of the lungs and blood flow images of the brain could revolutionize the future of personalized medicine, leading to earlier and more precise detection of different types of cancers and brain-related diseases.

The approach, referred to as hyperpolarized (HP) xenon-129 molecular imaging, promises more detail and sensitivity than other imaging techniques and does it instantaneously.

“It’s potentially a very powerful technique,” says Dr. Mitchell Albert, a Lakehead University professor in chemistry and Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute (TBRHRI) research chair in molecular imaging and advanced diagnostics.

Albert’s primary research is in the use of xenon in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology. As a graduate student in the 1990s, he co-invented a technique to boost the MRI signal using HP xenon gas, for which he received several awards, including a U.S. Presidential Award from Bill Clinton.

An ongoing initiative led by NOSM University’s Centre for Social Accountability (CFSA) with the Northwestern Ontario Health Teams (OHTs) is working to fill a major health human resources gap.

The OHT Impact Fellowship Program matches Ontario Health Teams with researchers who conduct data analysis. But when the first cohort of the program failed to match researchers with Northwestern OHTs, it became clear that a different approach was needed to meet the unique needs of our region.

The solution? A teams-based approach to an existing Impact Fellowship. Proposed by the CFSA’s Drs. Erin Cameron, Academic Director, and Brianne Wood, Associate Scientist, along with health-care partners throughout Northwestern Ontario, the initiative was funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health through the University of Toronto as part of a central program of supports for OHTs.

🎨 Illustration of Dr. Christopher Mushquash by Alanah Jewell/Morningstar Designs.

Dr. Mushquash is Vice President of Research at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, Chief Scientist at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute (TBRHRI), a Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Mental Health and Addiction, Professor at Lakehead University and NOSM University—Université de l'EMNO, and psychologist at Dilico Anishinabek Family Care.

Dr. Mushquash was awarded the Canada Gairdner Momentum Award — an award given to those who have produced exceptional scientific research contributions with continued potential for impact on human health.

Dr. Mushquash was awarded for Indigenous-led mental health and substance use research that leads to culturally and contextually appropriate services for Indigenous children, adolescents, and adults.

The design Jewell created was reflective of Dr. Mushquash’s work:

“I used eagle feathers in this illustration to represent Dr. Mushquash’s leadership and the ways in which he navigates the Western science world as an Indigenous researcher. Walking in both a Western world and an Indigenous world is no easy task: to be able to meet community needs while working through difficult systems takes incredible leadership and commitment. I also included eagle feathers to represent Dr. Mushquash’s community-based approaches, where he puts community and relationships at the forefront of his work. Dr Mushquash advocates for the well-being of community and allows them to speak their truth.

The medicine wheel represents Dr. Mushquash’s understanding of Indigenous health and well-being from a cultural perspective: it represents the ancestral teachings that are given to us by elders and knowledge keepers, all of which ground Dr. Mushquash in culture, ceremony and community.”

As we continue to see lower rates of COVID-19 in our community, we are happy to move forward with Phase 3 of our transition out of pandemic response activities.

When entering our Hospital, you will still need to sanitize your hands and self-screen for the symptoms posted at entrances.

As of May 25, 2023:

➡️ Patients, Essential Care Partners (ECPs) and Care Partners (CPs) are no longer required to wear a mask when entering our Hospital. However, it is important to note that ECPs and CPs are required to wear a mask if they are symptomatic and their presence is essential for a patient, or per Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) protocols (e.g. should an outbreak occur or based on the condition of the patient they are visiting). Patients are required to wear a mask if they are symptomatic or should IPAC protocols require masking.
➡️ Staff, Professional Staff, Learners and Volunteers are required to wear a mask if providing direct patient care and as required per IPAC protocols. Masking will no longer be required in public areas like the Cafeteria or Robin’s Donuts.

Masks will continue to be available at our entrances for those who wish to use them, or should their symptoms require it. As a reminder, the following entrances are for public use:

➡️ Main Entrance (6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.)
➡️ Emergency Department is for designated emergency only. Other Hospital areas will not be accessible through the Emergency Department.
➡️ Labour and Delivery doors for Labour and Delivery patients, ECPs and CPs.
➡️ Renal Doors for Renal patients, ECPS and CPs (6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.)
➡️ Door G for afterhours MRI patients (between 11:00 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.)

This marks the end of our phased transition out of COVID-19 response and our core response activities have now been integrated into operations where ongoing monitoring will continue.

We want to thank you for your cooperation, and please continue to be kind to your health care team as they provide safe, quality care for the people of Northwestern Ontario.

From February 26 to March 3, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) and Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute (TBRHRI) celebrated Employee Recognition Week. This week was dedicated to celebrating the people — medical staff, employees, teams, volunteers, and Patient Family Advisors who are making a difference for patients and families in Northwestern Ontario through their outstanding service and dedication.

This initiative aligns with our Hospital and Health Research Institute’s strategic priority of Staff Experience, by recognizing and celebrating the work that our staff are doing every day. Last year, TBRHSC and TBRHRI launched Strategic Plan 2026, identifying Staff Experience as one of the four key priorities. Improving staff experience includes taking action to retain, recruit and support staff.
