Today, we gather to honour the 66th anniversary of the Second Narrow Bridge collapse and the tragic loss of 18 ironworkers and one rescue diver. Ironworkers from across the country and elected officials are joining us to pay their respects. This year, we are honoured to have in attendance the last living ironworker survivor, Lucien Lessard. Take a moment today to join Ironworkers Local 97 as we commemorate those who tragically lost their lives and all those affected by the collapse.
On this day in 1958, the Second Narrows Bridge (now Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing) in Vancouver collapsed during construction.
Of the 79 workers who fell 30 metres into the water, 18 were killed. Some drowned because of their heavy tool belts.
This is going to be a great event. Looking forward to seeing you there!!
