The office staff for the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OCETA) in Toronto voted this week to join the IAM.

The new members had heard good things about the IAM and voted 100% to join.

“This is the third teacher union group to join us and we are looking forward to getting them a contract they can be proud of,” said IAM Organizer Scott Jackson.

IAM Local Lodge 1922 office and technical members employed at Magellan Aerospace in Malton, Ontario are getting ready to take on their employer in contract negotiations.

Every group that the IAM represents prepares for negotiations before meeting with the employer. Surveys are reviewed and demands are set at these preparation meetings.

IAM wants to ensure that we are prepared and doing our best, to get the best deal possible for our membership.

1922 Discusses Finances, AI, and Women’s Committee at General Meeting

On December 9, 2019, the members of IAM Local Lodge 1922 met for the last time in 2019 for our December General Meeting.

The meeting was well attended with many members out for their first IAM local lodge General Meeting.

Discussion and motions at the meeting included:

- Monthly local financials and recent strike donations.

- Re-establishing the 1922 Women’s Committee.

- Artificial Intelligence and its impact on workers.

The meeting was followed by a social to celebrate the holidays and to provide members with an opportunity to connect.

1922 Makes Donations to United Way for Tampon Tuesday
On December 10, 2019, IAM Local Lodge 1922 President Jerry Jarosz dropped off donations of feminine hygiene products for the United Way’s Tampon Tuesday.

The donations were collected at Magellan Aerospace from the members of 1922 and other employees.

Tampon Tuesday is a nation-wide initiative championed by the United Way with support from unions across Canada to raise awareness of the barriers vulnerable people face in accessing menstrual products. The campaign started in London, Ontario in 2009.

The building that they’re leaving dates back to the 1950s when it was first constructed by Victory Aircraft, and was the site of the development of the Orenda Iroquois Jet Engine, which was to power the Avro Arrow.

At 7:45pm EST this evening, after a full day and evening of negotiations, the Bargaining Committee of IAMAW Local Lodge 3111 CULR reached a Tentative Agreement with our employer, the Canadian Labour Congress.

We will be completing back-to-work protocols with our employer tomorrow, and will be in touch with our membership with details of a ratification meeting as soon as possible to allow an opportunity for all members to review and democratically vote on the terms and conditions of the Tentative Agreement.

Thank you to our many allies within and outside the labour movement, including the retirees on whose shoulders we stand, for the tremendous and overwhelming support for our membership over these past weeks. This support was instrumental in obtaining an agreement this evening.
