You all know Coach Marika, our Tough Mudder, OCR, do-it-all fitness leader who is always inspiring us both inside and outside of Energiaâs walls. Youâve probably seen her (and her amazing dog Zelda!) out and about on the East side of the city. This week she was able to answer some questions about her favorite Crossfit movements, go-to snacks and more!
âĄď¸Whatâs the toughest race you ever competed in?
Spartan Ultra (50km obstacle course race). I didnât make the time cut off, so it was a DNF. It took me 8hrs to run over 26km with an elevation gain of 2,167m. My goal is to successfully complete one within the next few years. I am coming for ya Spartan Ultra.
âĄď¸Whatâs your favourite crossfit movement?
Hands down, the overhead squat. Makes me feel like Atlas, the God of strength and endurance.
âĄď¸Whatâs your least favourite lift?
Thrusters. Need I say more?
âĄď¸Settle the debate for us, Hyrox or Crossfit?
CrossFit. I really enjoy lifting heavy and learning gymnastics movements as I never took gymnastics growing up. Never too old to learn a new skill.
âĄď¸What TV show are you currently watching?
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix. An anthology series about high-profile crimes or killers that captured public attention and notoriety.
âĄď¸Go to snack when youâre on the move?
If I donât have a banana handy, I grab a Darylâs protein bar. They are an Ontario based company that I discovered a few years ago.
âĄď¸What song is most played in your spotify?
âAll Nighterâ by Tiesto
âĄď¸What subject did you do worst in school at?
Toss up between Physics and Chemistry. Since I needed both to get into University, I went to summer school to get my grades up.
When we think of exercise or fitness we often think of workouts and movement. But sometimes the body need stillness too. Itâs about finding that balance.

Hey everyone
Weâre sharing a special WOD (Workout of the Day) for this week, in case anyone is looking for a little extra work outside of class :)
Itâs a relatively quick one that you can fit in 18 minutes whenever you have time.
â°EMOM 18 min (Every Minute on the Minute)
Min 1: 12 Burpees
Min 2: 15 Cal Row
Min 3: 20 Goblet Squats (25 - 40 lbs)
There are a lot of ways to adjust this workout depending on your needs and environment. For example, burpees could be scaled to down-ups. Rower calories can be lessened or switched to running (200 meters) or jumping jacks (50). The goblet squats can be adjusted to air squats.
Try to find weights or a pace that lets you complete each movement in 45-50 seconds per minute. Giving you that extra 10 seconds to rest and recover. Let us know how it goes!
Yoga can be so much more than just the physical movements :)
If youâve been coming to Energia for any amount of time you know that part of what makes the community so special is our coaches and instructors.
Our amazing yoga instructor Amanda was kind enough to share a bit more about herself and her passion for yoga.

Weâll track how many ânewbiesâ youâve brought on the challenge board in the gym.
â
At the end of November weâll draw one winner in a raffle who will get a 1 month FREE gym membership plus fun swag! (branded hat, shirt, and more!). Total value over $300
The more friends you bring, the greater your chance to win
Weâre hoping this will be a fun way to build our community and get more of your friends, families, and colleagues into class! If there is someone in your life you think would love to do some burpees and thrusters, this is the time to bring them ;)
