Karen's Painting (2024) was the catalyst piece of Seekers and Imprints.

In this painting, Audra Townsend, as an artist and researcher includes snippets of letters written to her grandmother by her late granduncle Herbert Athelstan Pritchard who was accepted to the British Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II.

As one of the few West Indian men serving in his time, Herbert wrote often to his mother who sent him care packages of food from her shop in Kingston, Jamaica. Herbert’s letters recalled his experiences and struggles as a Jamaican immigrant in the RAF and England in the 1950s.

Karen’s Painting visually is reminiscent of Caribbean Islands as seen from above and a closer look at the paintings allows you to glimpse Herbert’s words in Audra’s vivid colours. The piece is named for curator Karen Carter who has her own connections to Jamaican heritage and familial histories in the Diaspora.

Come view Seekers and Imprints, a solo exhibition by Audra Townsend at Band Gallery before closing day on September 14th!

Black Artists' Network In Dialogue is pleased to announce a historic acquisition from our collection to the Library and Archives of Canada.

Ears, Eyes, Voice: Black Canadian Photojournalists is a collection of works by black canadian photojournalists active between the 1970s and 1990s. This collection preserves a vital part of our cultural heritage and ensures that contributions of Black artists and leaders are recognized on a national stage. The permanent inclusion of these collections in the Library and Archives Canada underscores BAND's commitment to promoting and safeguarding the artistic and cultural legacy of the Black community.

This collection was first shown as a group exhibition in 2017, curated by BAND co-founder Julie Crooks. The photojournalists are in order, left to right: Jules Elder, Diane Liverpool, Eddie Grant, Al Peabody and Jim Russell.

Together, we celebrate the past, present, and future of Black artistry.

Thank you for joining us for the Artist Talk & Workshop last Saturday August 24th with Audra Townsend!

In "Seekers and Imprints", the complexities of immigrant histories where choice and agency are often questioned is layered with coloured storytelling of the contemporary Caribbean experience in the diaspora.

The program began with a conversation between artist Audra Townsend and curator Karen Carter, giving context to the research that is embedded physically and conceptually in Audra's paintings.

We had a great time reflecting on familial stories, the years that define us and the effects of migration on generations across the Diaspora. Participants also enjoyed learning about Audra's journey and creative process before diving into creating their own masterpieces.

The creative energy was buzzing throughout the workshop! Enjoy this visual recap of the day and collage pieces that were made during the workshop.

What artist workshop would you like to join us for at BAND!

Elicser Elliott and curator Nehal El-Hadi delved deeper into the stories and memories behind the paintings in his exhibition, Neglected Nostalgia and spoke about his process when creating these artworks.

These enchanted paintings bring together references from family folklore, childhood adventures, native flora, and vernacular architecture to reflect how we remember and re-imagine through affective relationships. Through Elicser's practiced storytelling, these seemingly disparate elements and moments constellate into lush and vibrant mise-en-scènes that captivate and enthrall viewers.

Dura is a public installation that manifests Chiedza Pasipanodya's research-based practice, centered on southern African ways of being, ways of knowing, and aesthetics from a diasporic lens. Dura will be a structural interpretation of a traditional Zimbabwean communal granary. It considers the tensions between abundance/ scarcity while at Fort York Historical Site, a meeting place of military and migrant histories, geographical tributaries and myriad communities.

In constructing Dura, Pasipanodya meditates on the questions of Kenyan guerrilla theorist Neema Githere: “How are we alchemizing our displacement? How are we activating the past, to put the present in motion towards the future?”

In Ndau society, the granary is a well of sustenance, which also indicates the health and prosperity of a family. In a time of heightened inflation and food scarcity, Dura offers a conceptual alternative to trickle-down economies, embodying an inclusive system of mutual aid and shared responsibility for everyone's care.

Out the window(2024) is based on a family story of how Elicser Elliott's father came to get a scar on his forehead in childhood that is still visible today — his father fell out of his bedroom window.

In this painting, Elicser transposes his father’s memory with his own memories of his mother’s childhood neighbourhood which he’s familiar with, placing his father as a child on his mothers street.

Can you spot the figure of a child in the background with his head wrapped?

Inspired by the pursuit of love and escape, Leone McComas' installation Everything will fade, these three remain: brings the location’s history to life by incorporating familiar sensory experiences.

Animated LEDs cast light through meditative brushwork, while motion-activated sensors respond to human presence and connectivity. By merging art, light, and interactivity, this installation encourages reflection on the profound aspects of life beyond its daily grind.

This installation is interactive - visit the site at the corner of Charlotte St. and Adelaide St. W., and step in front of the sensor. Raise your right hand to see the lights respond!

Presented in partnership with Labourers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) and Fengate Asset Management to activate the site at 355 Adelaide.

"Jackie, Jo and Oppenheimer is Elliott’s interpretation of a fascinating piece of family lore. The man holding the goat in the painting is physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who was visiting Saint Vincent, where Elliott’s mother grew up (she is the little girl holding the kite). Elliott encountered this story after the release of Christopher Nolan’s 2023 movie, paints the encounter as he imagines it, layering the inherited story over his memories of the island and his family’s life on it.

Perspectivism claims that there is no absolute truth; rather, the subject’s identity, experiences, position, context and standpoint inform how knowledge is processed. As German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche wrote in The Will to Power: “No, facts is precisely what there is not, only interpretations.”

In Elliott’s paintings, time and place collapse into each other, exploding, eliding, and combining in a material echo of the unexpected ways that memory works. His work draws connections, overlays emotions and generates relationships where before none existed. Memory assigns importance using impossible values, constructing meaning through disparate transpositions. Elliott’s storied configurations, in turn, transmute memories into something larger, something informative and identity-defining, with each re-imagining and re-telling."
