Happy Friday! 🤗We are excited that our latest journal cover design has been published In Nature Biomedical Engineering! 🎉🎉Working with the amazing research teams from MIT and Harvard, we produced both the accompanying illustrations for the article and the cover. The research features a implantable, soft-tissue robotic sleeve that recapitulates aortic stenosis. As medical illustrators, we often turn to our local grocery store for anatomy texture references. Some are really unexpected finds! When we look at textures, we break them down into individual properties such as colour, shape, reflectance, etc. We call these "visual analogies👀". What other unexpected texture twins have you seen before?

Hello! We have been a bit quiet lately, and that's because we are working on a new anatomy illustration series. We cannot share the work just yet BUT we can give you a look at the pitch illustration that helped us win the project several months ago.

This image features the intervertebral disc, and it is based on a 3D maquette we created.

The cross section of an intervertebral disc is fascinating! It has rings like those you find in a tree trunk.🤩We hope you enjoy this and take care of your intervertebral discs😎

Test render for one of our projects. Working on this illustration series has really put our problem-solving skills to the test😆 It’s a small step but we want to celebrate every small victory 🥳

Earlier this year, our team created this cover illustration for our client's article featuring femur head necrosis. The article was written to educate the general public on the causes, symptoms and treatment of this illness. We chose to show the general location of the anatomy first to orient our viewers, then we went a little deeper to compare the normal with the diseased state.

Another published illustration! This time, the topic is Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). This condition occurs when the blood is shunted unidirectionally from the artery to the vein in the placenta. One fetus becomes donor, and the other fetus becomes the recipient. The donor fetus becomes weaker as more blood is transfused away.

I love how zen illustration can be! It doesn’t even feel like work (most of the time). I watched the Pixar movie Soul recently and thought the “flow” states were so on point- time just melts away.
