🎉 Congratulations to our Director David Uahikeaikalei'ohu Maile on receiving, along with colleagues from the coalition Censure UofT, the Milner Memorial Award. The award, from the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT), recognizes a distinguished contribution to the cause of academic freedom.
In April 2021, CAUT imposed a censure on the University of Toronto for failing to uphold academic freedom after a hiring scandal at the Faculty of Law. Faculty members across the university, including Dr. Maile, then organized a successful campaign over the next 6-months in support of the censure, and ultimately to defend against the Palestine exception, donor interference, and violations of academic freedom.

reoffered the IHRP Director position to Dr. Valentina Azarova.
It did so one year after rescinding the offer to her, under pressure from donor interference and in violation of academic freedom and the Palestine exception.
It’s been a long year of advocacy, pressure, and work. We could not have done this without your help and labor.
Unsurprisingly but unfortunately for those of us at the university, Dr. Azarova declined the new offer.
While this is disappointing, it’s important to highlight that we achieved so much.
Victory!!! (But bittersweet)
