Equity’s Safe Space is coming back - and so it seems is theatre. As we gratefully move back into rehearsal rooms, we have a chance to make the kind of change we’ve been talking about for the past few years. We all know how much words matter - but how much thought do we give to the casual phrases we commonly use that can unintentionally hurt our colleagues and friends? Here’s some food for thought - an article on Ableism/Language by Lydia X.Y. Brown. Warning! It’s very long - and may take a few visits to read thoroughly and digest. Be sure to read their introduction. It provides a thoughtful nuanced context: https://www.autistichoya.com/p/ableist-words-and-terms-to-avoid.html

A joint project of Equity’s national Council and staff, Equity's Safe Space is a creative commons for sharing news, information and ideas about building and maintaining safe and respectful workspaces in Canadian professional theatre, opera and dance. We welcome industry-wide constructive discussion on how we can *all* make our workspaces the supportive and creative ones that live performance artists deserve to have.
