Established in 2005, the William and Phyllis Waters Graduating Award created by Dr. William Waters and the Tecumseh Sherman Rogers Graduating Award created by Dr. John B. Lawson are, at $25,000 each, the largest awards given by the Faculty of Music. The competitive application process is open to graduating students who are Ontario residents and includes a student submission outlining future plans and how the award will assist with career development, and letters of recommendation from faculty members.
Yuchen shared “Some favourite memories at the Faculty of Music include performing in studio recitals and the Japanese Taiko Drumming Ensemble, premiering a friend’s composition at the Student Composers Concert, presenting at the Undergraduate Research Showcase, and studying while observing squirrels on Philosopher’s Walk. The freedom and flexibility to shape my academic path and research, along with the guidance and support from faculty members and my friends, has been truly invaluable in my journey of growth, both academically and personally.”
Steven shared “My favourite memories at the University of Toronto came from working with fellow performance and music technology students in the Electronic Music Studio to put together some increasingly wacky performances and compositional experiments. These included hooking up house plants to wires to transform them into playable percussion instruments, and the development of a dynamic light sensor instrument attachment which measures changes in light colour/hue in a performance space, and affects changes in the sound and timbre of the instrument performing in that space. Curating the electroacoustic concert ConcertZero in McMillian Threatre was another highlight of mine at the University of Toronto. Development of this concert involved working with a wide range of individuals across the faculty’s performance and facilities staff, as well as outside organizations such as the Canadian Electroacoustic Community and fellow music technology students. What followed was an hour-long presentation of some incredible electroacoustic and video art pieces from UofT students and emerging electroacoustic composers from across the country, bringing together members of the electroacoustic music community in Toronto, and positioning the University of Toronto as a viable electroacoustic music venue in the city of Toronto going forward.”
Congratulations to all Graduating Award recipients and congratulations to Class of 2024!
Hugeee congratulations, Class of 2024!! 🎓🎶

Canadian violinist Jennifer Duke Martyn enjoys a busy career as performer, teacher, and researcher. She holds degrees in violin performance from the University of Toronto (BMus, DMA), and Mannes College (MMus) in New York City. Dr. Martyn’s performance career has taken her across Canada, as well as to Europe and Asia. She has performed with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kingston, Ottawa, Niagara, and Windsor Symphonies, l’Ensemble Prisme, Duo Felice, and the Talisker Players, including two programs in their acclaimed Journeys in Words and Music chamber music series. She has served as guest concertmaster with several orchestras, including the North York Concert Orchestra, the Talisker Players, and the Arcady Ensemble orchestra. A sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Martyn especially loves to work with children. She currently teaches with the North York Suzuki School of Music, and directs the children’s choirs at Metropolitan and Kingston Road United Churches in Toronto.
In her research at the University of Toronto, Dr. Martyn focused on the life and career of the nineteenth-century Swedish violinist and composer Amanda Maier and received numerous awards for her work, including the Ontario Graduate Scholarship and the Palmeson Graduate Fellowship in Violin. She has presented lecture-recitals about her research in Ottawa, Toronto, and Calgary, and in 2017 performed the Canadian premiere of Amanda Maier’s 1891 piano quartet. Dr. Martyn has contributed to the Library of Congress Performing Arts blog “In the Muse” and in 2024 she was interviewed about Amanda Maier on the BBC Radio 3 programme “Composer of the Week.”
Jennifer shared about her experience at the Faculty of Music: “I loved working with all of my violin teachers: Annalee Patipatanakoon, Mark Fewer, and the late Yehonatan Berick, as well as my amazing doctoral supervisor Ryan McClelland. I really enjoyed doing research in the library and playing detective with the help of the librarians. I found great support and friendship in the violin performance class in my undergrad, and I really enjoyed the DMA String Literature course. A highlight was getting to play as concertmaster with the UTSO in Brahms’ second symphony just before I graduated.”
To add another happy note onto this post, Dr. Martyn also recently won a tenure-track section violin position with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra! Join us in congratulating her for this next chapter of her musical journey!
