Another great post from Geoff at Watermark:
Hey everyone - As Shakespeare once famously wrote (Iām pretty sure this is how it goes), āTo Repair or Replace, that is the questionā ā¦ Or as I not-so-famously just wroteā¦ āCan I fix this toilet, or should I consider just replacing it altogether?ā. š¤Ø Letās take a walk through the parameters we use as plumbers to determine if itās best to try to fix that toilet thatās giving you trouble, or replace it all
together!
Your (hopefully) favourite plumber is back for another episode of āHow NOT to Call the Plumber!ā. These posts are aimed to help you with the most common plumbing issues you might have around the house ā and hopefully save you some money. So letās get into it!
The vast majority of toilet issues come as a result of hardware problems within the toiletās tank. Those issues display as a toilet that might be constantly running, making hissing sounds, sporadically filling, etc.
When determining if itās best to fix the toilet versus replace it altogether, it comes down to a few things:
1. Accessibility of Parts
While you can find parts for most toilets, there are just some brands of toilet that make this much more difficult. Brands like American Standard, Toto, and Kohler all have easily accessible parts, but when you get into lesser known brands, parts can become more difficult to find. In situations like this, itās often best (aka cheaper) to replace the toilet altogether, than spend countless hours looking for parts, thinking you have the correct part but just finding out during the repair itās not, etc., etc., etc.
2. Age of the Toilet (Part 1)
When a toilet reaches an age of about 12-15 years or more, itās usually best to think about a full replacement rather than repair. We find that once toilets reach that age, they tend to fail faster, with less time between failures. Itās best to replace the toilet the first time rather than call someone in multiple times over the course of a couple of years to fix varying issues on an old toilet!
3. Age of the Toilet (Part 2)
Age also matters because of water usage. Many older toilets will use 4 or more gallons of water per flush (thatās like pouring 30 water bottles down the drain every time you flush the toilet!). Not only is this terrible for the environment, but also for you water bill every month! A new toilet will use as little as 1 GPF (plumber speak for Gallons per Flush) and due to new ātechnologyā are able to flush with more power than their older counterparts!
4. Cracks
If your toilet is cracked, replace it ā plain and simple. Not only is it extremely dangerous to be sitting on a cracked piece of porcelain that can fall apart at any moment and slice your butt open, but when it does, youāll also most likely be dealing with a major flood to go along with your new stitches!
All in all, those are the most common things weāre looking at when a customer reaches out with a toilet issue. Every situation is different, but I hope that helped you to determine what might be best for you the next time you find yourself in the toilet (or toilet repair) aisle!
Have an excellent weekend ā weāll see you next time!

Want to learn how easy it is to get a $1,750 subsidy from the City of Toronto?
This summer Toronto experienced record breaking rainfall which resulted in thousands of homeowners having to deal with flooding issues.
Rising groundwater levels combined with untimely power outages is a recipe for disaster ā¦ and a costly one at that.
Which is why installing a sump pump in your home is almost a necessity.
This is where Torontoās Basement Flooding Subsidy comes in - a program whereby the city of Toronto will rebate you 80% of the invoiced cost of installing a sump pump and/or sump pump battery backup up to a maximum of $1,750!
And unlike most rebate programs the city has streamlined the application process to the point it will take you less than 5 minutes to submit!
Here are the steps to apply, which is fully online and done through a series of simple check boxes.
1. Have a sump pump and/or battery backup installed in your home - the installation of the sump and/or battery backup system must be completed and paid in full.
2. Confirm that youāve had your downspouts disconnected from the city sewers
3. Acknowledge that you donāt have any outstanding taxes owed
4. Fill out your name, address, phone number, and email address
5. Verify that the contractor who did the work for you is registered with the city, by inputting their Contractor Business License Number
6. Upload your āPaid in Fullā invoice
7. Upload a photo of your new sump system as well as a photo of the discharge pipe outside
8. Submit!
THATāS IT!
Once youāve submitted your application it will go through an approval process within a day or two - and then you just wait for your cheque!
Pretty simple right?
If youād like to learn more about the rebate program or about how to get a sump pump installed - reach out today!
Not only could you save up to $1,750 today but you could save yourself thousands more in the future.
