“Get involved in your Little One’s play” is a strategy we teach all the time to promote language development.
WHY?
Your child learns language best during active play moments with the people they love the most (That’s YOU).
BUT…
▶️We recognize how difficult this can be for parents who have not played for decades since they themselves were little.
▶️Our top tip to have FUN in play while supporting language learning is to make sure you are touching the toys. This allows parents to naturally follow their child’s lead in play while reducing the pressure to “teach” concepts or think about “how” to play. It also stops parents from being stuck in the “watching from the sidelines” position.
▶️A good few minutes of daily interactive play is all you need to make a huge difference in your Little One’s play and language development.
🗯Tell us…what’s one play activity that you absolutely love playing with your Little One? 👇
Introducing…Bespoke Speech!

We are bespoke!
Introducing…Bespoke Speech!
😅This is the most common question we get asked and the hardest one for us to answer.
✨That’s because no two kids (or families) are the same and there are so many factors involved with communication.
✨Until we meet your Little One and learn all about them it’s difficult to pinpoint “why” your child communicates but not with words.
✨Our SLP assessment evaluates your Little One’s strengths and determines whether or not there are any areas that we can support them with. The assessment helps us develop a plan to work TOGETHER with YOU to achieve their communication goals.
💪🏽We are happy to help you off that anxiety mountain of worry and get you going in supporting your Little One’s communication
Well….did you say “latte” out loud? 😅
Or did you ignore it and scroll down? 🤣
▪️As adults, we do not like it when people tell us to do things. In fact, it’s very rare for someone to ask you to say something, unless you’re at a doctor’s office (say “ahh”) or taking a picture (say “cheese”).
▪️If this rarely happens in adulthood and it wouldn’t feel very good if it did, why would we use “Say...” with our Little Ones when trying to get them to talk?
▪️The same feelings that we felt above are the same for our children. Instead of asking your child to “Say…..[insert word here]”, drop the “Say” and use the word on it’s own when communicating to your child.
🚫”Say Apple”
✅ “Apple….yummy Apple!”
▪️Modelling words is much more natural, decreases the pressure to talk, and increases the opportunity for your child to copy what you have said. Remember, copying (or “imitation”) is a stepping stone to be able to use new words on their own. It’s incredibly valuable.
▪️While the “Say” strategy may work sometimes (we see it happening on occasion with our clients); your child is only RESPONDING to your command.
🧐Why is this a problem?
We want language to come from WITHIN and initiation of language (or STARTING the conversation) is important in developing strong social communication skills and language development in preschoolers.
😎Give it a try at home and Don’t Say….”SAY!“
❓Questions are Conversational Stoppers! 🙅🏻♀️
🔸Many of us think that asking questions will get your Little One to talk. But the opposite is true.
🔸If your Little One is trying to learn how to use words they may not have the ability to answer leading to communication breakdowns, frustrations, ignoring you, or walking away.
🔸As adults, we do not like being bombarded with questions and we shy away from these kinds of interactions.
🤭The same goes for our Little Ones.
🔸The next time you catch yourself asking a question…Turn it in to a COMMENT.
“Is that red?” ➡️ “yummy red apple”
“Are you pushing the bus?” ➡️ “You’re pushing the bus!”
“What’s that?” ➡️”I see a big doggy!”
🔸Comments help with back-and-forth conversation and it naturally reflects how we communicate as human beings.
🔸Comments also set up IMITATION opportunities (the ability to copy what someone has said). Imitation is an important stepping stone to build words and sentences.
🔸You CANNOT imitate a question, you can only answer a question (if you can and want to!)
🤯Mind blowing when you think about it!

💐To celebrate Mother’s Day we are featuring amazing women reading books to kids. This is our second lockdown for Mother’s Day and what we have learned is that we are all here to support each other and that it truly takes a village to raise children.
We will be featuring those who have kids, those who almost have, those who are (still) waiting, those who have lost, those who are no longer here with us, and those who are everything in between. No categories, just a love for our kids and appreciation for books.
Have an amazing woman you want to us to feature on our grid? Send us a DM!
