Canadian Writing and Publishing Organizations Advocate for Artificial Intelligence Regulations in Ottawa 05/02/2024

Canada has the opportunity to create a regulatory system for AI that supports the value of human creation and sustains our vital cultural industries. Let's not miss our chance.

Association nationale des éditeurs de livres - ANEL, the Canadian Authors Association, the Canadian Publishers' Council, Writers' Union of Canada, Union des écrivaines et des écrivains québécois, Literary Press Group of Canada, Association of Canadian Publishers, Copibec & Regroupement des éditeurs franco-canadiens.

We were pleased to join our colleagues in Ottawa on Tuesday to advocate on the Hill about the impact of generative AI on Canadian creators and publishers and for a fair legal framework to regulate AI to protect their livelihoods.

We wish to thank all MPs and officials who took time to meet with us, in particular Minister of Canadian Heritage Pascale St-Onge Brome-Missisquoi, Parliamentary Secretary Taleeb Noormohamed, and the sponsor of our reception, Lisa Hepfner.

Our collective recommendations regarding AI regulation include:

Ensure the Copyright Act provides fair protection of the moral rights of authors, and the copyright of authors and publishers.

Do not introduce a new copyright exception or compulsory licence regime for Text and Data Mining (TDM).

Ensure that Bill C-27 includes reasonable provisions on transparency, similar to those introduced in the European Union, and that it obliges AI developers to comply with Canadian copyright law when they train and deploy their products.

Federal Budget 2024: Another Missed Opportunity for Copyright Reform 04/18/2024

"The Copyright Act does not adequately protect Canadian authors, rightsholders and publishers. The government must take action during the current parliamentary session to remedy this longstanding issue." Pascale St-Onge Brome-Missisquoi François-Philippe Champagne

Federal Budget 2024: Another Missed Opportunity for Copyright Reform Access Copyright and Copibec, copyright collectives serving over 40,000 writers, visual artists, and publishers across Canada, are alarmed by the Government of Canada's Budget 2024, which neglects to include long-needed action regarding Canada’s fair dealing regime.

Canadian writers, visual artists, and publishers need copyright reform now 04/09/2024

From The Hill Times - "Canadian writers, visual artists, and publishers need copyright reform now" Justin Trudeau Pascale St-Onge Brome-Missisquoi François-Philippe Champagne

Canadian writers, visual artists, and publishers need copyright reform now Collective licensing has been severely eroded over the last decade in Canada. Continued inaction by the government only serves to legitimize a growing culture of taking without paying.

Access Copyright stands with the people of Israel and all those impacted by the crisis in Israel and Gaza. We unequivocally condemn the horrific acts of terrorism by Hamas that have deliberately targeted innocent civilians. We are deeply saddened to acknowledge that this violence breeds further violence, leading to tragic losses on both sides as well as inflaming hatred and prejudice around the world. Though it seems a distant hope at times like these, we persist in longing for peace in the region. Access Copyright firmly rejects antisemitism and all other forms of bigotry which divide humanity. We are committed to countering evil and building understanding through moral courage and open dialogue.

Canada: A Nationwide Coalition Demands a Copyright Fix 08/04/2023

From Publishing Perspectives - "No other developed nation’s legislators has seen such a profound rout of copyright protections as has resulted because of the loophole that educational interests have been able to exploit to make copies of legally copyrighted content without paying the per-student fees established to provide proper revenues to the rights holders of those works."

We urge François-Philippe Champagne & Pascale St-Onge Brome-Missisquoi to make copyright reform in Canada an urgent priority.
