A personal post on this New Year’s Eve: Tonight will mark 6 years since my friend JJ took his life. He was my oldest friend. My first friend. Our mothers were pregnant at the same time, and we grew up together. It was because of JJ that I learned music. He was a very bossy child with a wonderfully large personality, and he decided that we would start a band. He informed me that I’d be playing the drums, and that’s precisely how things unfolded. Now I have a career in music. And it’s because of him. I owe JJ my career, and if you are a fan of The Holy Gasp, you too owe a bit of gratitude to JJ. Because none of it could have been without him.

The last time I saw JJ was about three months before he died. He was dragging his feet through Kensington Market, wearing pajamas and slippers. He said, “Everything hurts and I don’t know why I even get out of bed.” It was a cry for help that was anything but subtle. I stood with him a long while and listened to him tell me about his suffering, but by New Years Day, he was gone.

This is my personal phone number. 437-999-9255. It is a landline with no call display. If you are thinking of hurting yourself tonight, call me. I will pick up. Whoever you are. Regardless of whether we’ve ever met. You can be anonymous if you’d like, or you can strive to be known. I will pick up for you. I will give you my attention.

New options have a way of presenting themselves to us after a good night’s sleep. But you have to make it to the morning. New Years is an opportunity to start new. Given the difficult decision of starting new or giving up, please be brave and start new.

Whoever you are, whatever you are going through, I love you, and others do too. Carpe diem. I’ll see you in the new year.

Hey MUSICIANS, MEDIA & MUSIC INDUSTRY, a peer needs our help. Rob Bursey or CelticBob has been a music journalist for probably a couple decades now. Hard rock and metal music lovers may know him from the site Metal Rules, but he was a fan of good music period so I remember many times he spotlighted my non-hard rock artists.

He has been off of work battling bowel disease with complications the last couple of years. Now his insurance cut his disability and he is losing his job of 32 years. So on top of health struggles he has to stress about medical bills, cost of living, debt and no job to return to when he gets his health under control.

Actress, writer, and producer, Stacey Marie Keba is driven to bring her girl next door with a mysterious edge spirit to every role she takes on.

She is excited to have her first comedic supporting role as the bitchy receptionist Kate in Universal France's 2022 French-American Comedy “Mon Héroïne.” Keba is also attached to "Metronome," where she plays Marni, a co***ne loving waitress who works at Philadelphia's famed Zanzibar Blue jazz club in the 1990s.

It's vital for her to do this work because movies, television, and the craft of acting has provided her with hope, joy, and a safe outlet to express her emotions-three things that she didn't have a lot of as a kid.

Keba had a lot to overcome growing up in a trailer park ridden with drug and gun violence along with child predators, having to be a caretaker for her mom from the age of five until her death when she was 18, her dad declaring bankruptcy even after all the years of working overtime night shifts at the factory, and being the victim of sexual assault in college that resulted in PTSD and not being able to graduate.

Leading with her values of bravery, empathy and authenticity, Keba hopes that by bringing her experience into the roles she accepts, she can be an inspiration for young women to feel safe, seen, heard, and understood.
