Thanks Mothers of Peace Regent Park for leading the Mother's Healing Circle program held in Regent Park for the past few months. In addition to the trip to Centre Island - it was great seeing the Mothers impacted by gun violence, attending the session ending meeting this week where participants discussed coping strategies over the holiday season. It was also great as all Mothers were gifted with a winter hat by Kelly Whetter from the Red Balloon Foundation - who lost her son to gun violence. Community Healing is a must as it improves community safety. This message was delivered loud and clear at the community march against gun violence on Sept 23rd - down Yonge St. And up University Avenue to Queens Park and led by the Out to Ride bikers group. Another message delivered was the need for the Provincial government to restore victim supports that they reduced and to provide timely and appropriate supports without expiry dates. Good time to cut cake with some of the key contributors to the ZGVM work over the past 10 years since launch on June 21, 2013 at the Redemption Reintegration Services office in Scarborough. Initially launched as a 90 day summer initiative to address the gun violence crisis in Toronto - but little did we know the magnitude and multiply dimensions - which explains why 10 years later - we are still at work. Maximum thanks and appreciation to all the people and organizations that have joined the fight - truly a collaboration for life and safe communities. The neanderthal thinking Conservative MPP's still seem frozen in the ice-age as they gang-ed up yesterday at QueensPark to vote against Bill-9 - a common sense bill to address the trauma and emotional impacts of gun violence on so many people and communities. Gun violence has already been recognized as a public health crisis by the City and Public Health, along with several other cities across Canada and North America so that appropriate resources and supports can be focused on addressing the long-term gun violence impacts that not only feed into the ongoing cycle of violence but also destroy the quality of life of so many.
