👣 ORTHOTICS 👣

With the year is coming to an end, I’ve been getting a few questions about orthotics. Also, how crazy is it that we have less than 1️⃣ month left of 2021?! ⏳

So, what are orthotics? 🤔
Orthotics are specialized shoe inserts that are customized to address your specific needs. Although they may look just like an insole, they are biomechanical medical devices used to help treat various foot and body conditions.

How do they work? 👟
Orthotics are designed to provide support and help control abnormal foot motion. They also improve proprioception (sensory feedback) and reduce stress that is placed on tissues in our body when standing, walking and running 🏃‍♂️
As we know, any stress that is placed on the body for a long period of time can lead to discomfort, pain, or even injury🤕
Orthotics help reduce stress by altering muscle activations in the lower limb and redirect stress to different tissues. It is through these various means that orthotics can help alleviate pain and reduce injury 💥

How are they made? 🛠
When you come in for your orthotic assessment, a comprehensive examination will first be completed to see if you could benefit from orthotics 🩺

Then, digital modelling technology will be used to take precise digital imprints of your feet. These imprints will be sent to a lab and your customized orthotics will be created! 🦶

What conditions do they help treat? 🍃
✨Pes planus & Pes planus (flat feet & high arches)
✨Plantar fasciitis
✨Bunions
✨Shin splints
✨Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
✨Knee osteoarthritis
✨Sacroiliac Syndrome
✨Low back pain
✨.. more!

If you are interested in having an orthotic assessment:

❄️ or 🔥?

You see your chiropractor and you ask, “Should I use ice or heat for my pain?” 🧐

While this may seem like a straight forward question, the answer is a bit more complex 🧩
There is much debate over using ice or heat for injuries such as which method is best, when should you use ice vs heat, and how long should they be applied.
Here are some general rules of thumb for when to use ❄️ or 🔥:

ICE ❄️
Typically, for acute (new) injuries, ice is the choice. It helps control inflammation and swelling that occur with new injuries. The cold effect of applying ice constrict our blood vessels which can help numb pain, reduce inflammation and swelling, and limit bruising.

A good example of when to ice would be after you sprained your ankle playing soccer over the weekend ⚽️

HEAT 🔥
For long standing injuries (older than 6 weeks) and chronic pain, heat can be considered. Heat does the opposite of ice: It increases blood flow to the area of injury. This can help to relax tight muscles and increase range of motion in stiff, achy joints. By increasing blood flow, heat may also aid in healing of damaged tissues.

An example of when to use heat is for muscles spasms seen in chronic low back pain 💥

My advice to patients?💡
I typically suggest these rules of thumb, but also tell patients that it comes down to their preference too 😇 Sometimes it is best to go with what works for you. If you tried ice and it didn’t feel good or you didn’t feel like it helped, switch it up and try heat!

🚨🚨🚨
◇Always consult a health care professional before using ice or heat to ensure you applying them appropriately, safely and without causing further harm.
◇ Ice and heat shouldn’t be used as a treatment on their own. They are supplemental treatment options help aid our body’s natural recovery process.

🤸‍♀️Are you moving enough?

✨Some of you may have heard the saying “Movement is Medicine” and this could not be more true! Being physically active is so beneficial for your health, yet many of us do not move enough in a day 👎

But what does physical activity mean? 📝

According to The WHO, physical activity is defined as “Any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that require energy expenditure”. Or in simpler terms, any form of movement your body does! 💪

Physical inactivity (the lack of movement) is a huge burden worldwide 🌎
1 in 4 or 1.4 BILLION people across the world do not engage in enough physical activity daily. Being inactive can have tremendous consequences on one’s health

How do you know how much you should be moving? 🤔
Luckily, Canada has developed a 24-hour movement guideline to help Canadians🍀

🏃‍♀️ Physical activity
◆ 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per week. This can include brisk walking or going for a bike ride
◆ Strength training of your major muscle groups twice a week
◆ Spending several hours a day doing light activity such as standing

🎮 Limiting Sedentary Time
◆8 hours or less per day
◆No more than 3 hours a day of recreational screen time such as watching Netflix
◆Breaking up long periods of sitting as much as you can

💤 Sleep
◆Getting 7-9 hours of good quality sleep regularly
◆Consistent bed and wake up times

🍃There are so many health benefits to being physically active. It is something you can do to improve your health without the need of a drug or pill 💊Even small amounts of physical activity are better than none!

💕Some of my favourite ways to move are going for walks along the seawall and playing soccer!
How are you going to meet the physical activity recommendations?
