Our this week is a ketchup packet!
Over 855 billion single-use sachets are disposed of each year, this is enough to cover the entire surface of the Earth.
These sachets are made up of complex multi-layers of polymers, aluminum, and films, they are not easily separated and therefore are very difficult to recycle.
However, Heinz, a company that globally distributes 11 billion ketchup packets annually, has previously announced that they are aiming to make 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable packaging by 2025.
Which would help to keep a large percentage of those pesky plastic sachets out of the landfill and our waterways!

Today’s is herring!
For thousands of years, Pacific herring have been an important traditional food source that are central to the social, cultural, and economic relations of Coastal First Nations.
These forage fish are harvested in coastal waters during the spawning season with nets, rakes, and fish traps. To harvest the eggs, hemlock or cedar branches or kelp blades were suspended near the spawning grounds, allowing for the eggs to be laid on these materials and then easily peeled off and collected.
Herring and herring eggs were and are still eaten fresh, or smoked, or dried, and used for trade or later consumption at feasts and potlatches.
Halkomelem Translations for Herring:
Hul̓q̓umín̓um̓ (Island dialect) - slhewut'
Halq̓eméylem (Upriver dialect) - sts'ámex

Our this week is a cigarette butt!
Did you know that a single cigarette can pollute up to 500L of water? Or that one cigarette takes 12 years to disappear?
They are the most common garbage collected from the world’s beaches with them accounting for 40% of the waste. Cigarette butts also often disintegrate into microplastics, due to their filter, resulting in the pollution of waterways and harming wildlife.

Our Story
Fraser Riverkeeper, an initiative of Swim Drink Fish, is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to the protection and restoration of the Fraser River and its watershed— and our encompassing mission is to ensure the right of all citizens to safely swim, drink, and fish in BC waters.
We believe the best way to ensure swimmable, drinkable, fishable water is to build a network of water guardians, people who are connected to their waters, connected to each other, and active in community life.
Swim Drink Fish is a registered Canadian charity established in 2001. We represent a movement of over 4 million people in communities where access to clean water is threatened. We teach water literacy, support grassroots efforts to combat beach closures, drinking water threats, and disappearing habitat. We also aim to ensure that everyone has access to clean water for swimming, drinking, and fishing.
Our flagship projects blend science, law, education, and storytelling with technology to empower millions to know and safeguard their waters. We work closely with other local Waterkeepers across Canada, including Fraser Riverkeeper in Vancouver, to implement a variety of programs to archive and share stories, data, and evidence collected by these communities.
