Did you know? September is NICU Awareness Month.

Last year, 18% of the families who stayed at our 73 bedroom House had babies in the NICU, and the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Surrey Memorial Hospital served many more- meaning that babies like Aliya could always have their family nearby while they were in the hospital.

“The Ronald McDonald Family Room provided us with a much-needed refuge and comfort during a challenging time for our family,” Aliya’s parents shared. “The warmth and care we received over those 3 months made a significant difference.”
NICU Awareness Month focuses on raising awareness about the critical care given to premature and newborn babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). It celebrates the medical advancements and the hard work of NICU staff, while also recognizing the strength and resilience of families navigating this challenging time. NICU Awareness Month encourages support for these families and aims to help others understand their experiences through shared stories and information.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Last year at RMH BC & Yukon, 22% of the families who stayed at the House had children battling cancer, and these families have some of the longest stays at the House as well.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is a time to reflect on how we can better understand and address the needs of children affected by cancer, as well as their families and caregivers.

For the Hawkes family from Victoria BC, RMH BC & Yukon was a safe place to call home for 10 months while their daughter Ella received treatment for osteosarcoma. Staying at the House helped to take care both Ella and her parents through programs such as Family Meals – meaning that they could focus on the most important thing: helping Ella to heal. For many kids like Aubrey and Brielle, their first day of school this year was anything but normal. Instead of meeting their new teachers and starting new classes, they were far from home supporting each other through doctors’ appointments and hospital visits. The Education Program at RMH BC & Yukon supports children and families who are away from their schools, helping them continue learning during difficult times.

“It’s evident that children miss the routines of school that they’re used to at home, and this program provides them with that continuum of care and support,” says RMH BC & Yukon’s Education Support Specialist Sarah Shynkaryk. “The power of siblings supporting each other when they learn and the relief it brings to parents and caregivers is truly significant.”

Our recent Staff Led Family Dinner was a delightful Hawaiian Luau! 🌴 Staff members, dressed in vibrant Hawaiian shirts and leis, prepared and served delicious meals to the families, all under the expert guidance of our in-house Chef Gabe.

The evening was filled with mouth-watering dishes like Grilled Huli Huli Chicken and Chocolate Haupia Tarts, and we were also treated to mesmerizing Hawaiian dance performances.

A huge mahalo to our partner, Save-On-Foods, for making this event possible by providing the groceries and ingredients we used. Your support ensures our kitchens are always stocked, providing families with the nourishment they need when it matters most. 🌟

🏌️‍♂️ The 31st Annual Vancouver Island Golf Tournament presented by RLC Park Services was an extraordinary success, raising an astounding $200,000 for the families of RMH BC & Yukon! 🎉

This incredible amount equates to approximately 800 Nights of Comfort for families who must travel far from home for their seriously ill child’s urgent medical treatment. 🏡💖

Not every child will be going Back to School this Fall. 📚

Parents Kelli and Brandon Eckert envisioned their son Duncan’s first day of Grade 1 to be very different. When Duncan was diagnosed with leukemia, the Eckerts had to put their lives on hold and drive 7 hours to Vancouver – over 540 KM away. Their minds were filled with countless worries. Thankfully, they found a room at RMH BC & Yukon, where they could stay together and benefit from Wellness Programs, including the Education Program.

Did you know: this incredible space has 73 rooms, along with beautiful shared kitchen, play and program spaces, that provide housing and support for families across BC. Which means that sick kids and their families who travel to receive specialized care can stay together during their child’s treatment and recovery.

Ronald McDonald House is located in , on the grounds of BC Children's Hospital & BC Women's Hospital. And we’re so lucky to have it in the community! But it doesn’t exist to serve local families, it serves families across BC and the Yukon, including families from rural and remote communities, who need to be here for their kids’ care. Approximately 1/3 of families come from Vancouver Island, 1/3 from the Interior, and 1/3 from the North.

As a parent, I can only imagine how devastating it would be to find out your kid is sick and needs high level care. I’m so grateful for this place and the incredible staff that make that difficult time slightly less hard for BC and Yukon families in need. ❤️

2. Visit a Return-It Express depot or kiosk.
3. Provide our account number: 604 736 2957 at the depot or kiosk.
4. Print your tags, tag your bags, and leave them in the designated area.

Return-It Express will handle the rest, sorting, counting, and refunding your deposit to the RMH BC & Yukon account. 🏠❤️

🌞🌱 Summer Harvest Joy! 🌱🌞

Over the past month, our dedicated volunteer Master gardeners have harvested over 20lbs of fresh lettuce, kale, and spinach! 🥬 Chef Gabe has been incorporating these nutritious greens into our Family Dinners, and our families are thrilled to enjoy the veggies of our labor. 🍽️

There’s nothing quite like the joy of gardening and savoring fresh, homegrown vegetables. 🌿💚 The smiles on our families’ faces say it all!

Heartfelt Connections in Kelowna 💖

On average, close to 30% of the families who stay at RMH BC & Yukon come from the Interior. Today, we had the pleasure of reconnecting with RMH BC & Yukon alumni families, both past and present, during our event in Kelowna. The team was in town for the Okanagan Dream Rally this weekend, and it was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the incredible sense of community that RMH BC & Yukon fosters. 🌟
