Painter and ECU alum Kai Liu (MFA 2024) has a new solo show at Visual Space Gallery. 🌊

Running August 29-September 14, “Coastal Reverie” is a personal journey of the artist, inspired by his exploratory ventures along the West Coast of Canada. Each painting is a testament to the landscapes the artist intimately experienced, expressed through a unique visual language that fuses their impressions of the coastal scenery with the depth of their emotions. These paintings are not just representations of places but also lyrical reflections that transform observations into contemplative depictions of nature.

Opening reception: Saturday, August 31. 2 to 4pm
Artist talk: Saturday, September 7. 2pm.

Nicole Dextras (Visual Arts Diploma 1986) wins Leo award for Best Production Design. The ECU alum and filmmaker won for her film: Chronos, time of sand, in the Short Drama category on June 7, 2024. ⏳

“Set in a dystopian future ravaged by years of extreme drought, Chronos lives alone in an abandoned sand filled house. Like his ingenious Solarpunk ancestors, he is a master tinkerer and he spends his days creating small sculptures from the junk he finds in the now buried neighbourhood of his ancestral home. His quiet life is disrupted with the discovery that his water supply is running low, which forces him to embark on an epic journey to find the man-made oasis his father had built.”

Chronos, time of sand is part of a trilogy of short films by Nicole titled A Dressing the Future. The series “aspires to combat climate anxiety by depicting the skills and DIY technologies that are available today, from creating textiles from plants to the dew collecting tower that captures moisture from the clouds.”

Congratulations to Nicole!

Alexander Farah (BFA 2014) Wins Best Editing at Vancouver Short Film Festival. 🎉

“It’s very endearing to earn the respect and recognition from my local peers. It’s humbling to be awarded for my work in this way,” Alexander says in reaction to receiving the award. In 2023, he was awarded Best Editing for the short Lay Me by the Shore (2022) which makes this year’s VSFF win his second in a row.

Alexander was chosen for his contributions to the short film Motherland, directed by Jasmin Mozaffari, who was recognized this year by VSFF as Best Director. The winners were announced during a ceremony held on June 2 at the Vancouver International Film Festival Centre in downtown Vancouver.

The editor-director relationship between Alexander and Jasmin thrived thanks to a strong foundation. The two connected after Alexander was impressed by Jasmin’s short Firecrackers (2013).

“We serendipitously worked together on a few music videos in 2019, and have since struck a very close friendship,” he says.

Artist and ECU alum Charlotte Wall (BFA 2004) has a solo exhibition on now through the month of July, at Paul Kyle Gallery.

The show is called Reveal, and transcends the ordinary boundaries of sculpture and installation: the gallery space is in its entirety a narrative of her life and spirit, and a provocatively significant artistic language that is fearlessly enduring with an ephemeral and intimate feminine touch.

Central to Wall’s artistic practice is the materiality of her work. She employs a diverse range of materials, each chosen for its inherent physical and symbolic qualities, to construct narratives that are open to interpretation. Wall’s work is a dialogue of materials, where cloth, yarn, wood, metal, salt, and paint come together in a deliberate juxtaposition that challenges the viewers to explore their interrelationships and to construct their own languages and meanings. These works are not passive, they are created as inhabitable spaces that invite viewers to interpret and interact, allowing for multi-faceted engagements that transcend the limitation of traditional art viewing.

Nimi Martins (MDES 2024) receives ECU Alumni Association Award for Community Engagement.

The designer and recent Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECU) grad was recognized for her project The Manicure Mixer: Design Lessons from a Black Beauty Salon.

Nimi’s experience relocating from Nigeria to Vancouver informed her initial concept. In reflecting on this experience, she recalls the sense of isolation she felt upon discovering the immediate daily realities of living in a city where Black people make up less than 1.5% of the population.

Black beauty salons, Nimi notes, are found on “every corner” in her home city of Lagos. Finding them absent in Vancouver, she realized she longed for these spaces, which hold the potential for meaningful social interaction in addition to nail, hair and lash services. They are women’s spaces—safe and comfortable spots in which to gather and speak freely.

“In a space like this where everyone can be truly themselves, what happens?” Nimi asked.

This question led to the first iteration of The Manicure Mixer. Nimi posted a call on Facebook for five local Black women to receive free manicures and snacks in Nimi’s basement. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and Nimi found herself having to turn people away: more evidence of how much need there was for such spaces.

ECU Alumni Relations would like to acknowledge the sad passing of Preston Buffalo. Preston, a Two-Spirited Cree artist originally from Treaty 6 Territory, studied at ECU between 2018-2022 and made a lasting impact on the community.

His website (prestonbuffalo.com), where much of his art is documented, describes his work as follows:

“His interdisciplinary practice involves the exploration of personal Indigenous iconography and symbolism, utilizing photography, alternative photo processes, and digital illustration. Motivated by the challenges faced by Indigenous communities, Preston's work touches upon themes such as mental health, cultural and linguistic loss due to displacement, the impact of the residential school system, and the process of assimilation.”

Preston had recently completed a residency with SUM Art Gallery and his resulting works had been on display April-June 2024.

Our thoughts are with those who were closest to Preston, who will feel this untimely loss most acutely.

ECU alum Judy Chartrand (BFA 1997) has been shortlisted for the prestigious Sobey Art Award. Judy is of Manitoba Cree heritage and is now based in Vancouver. She is known for her ceramic and installation-based work, which exposes urgent issues around racism, ignorance and privilege.

Congratulations, Judy!

The Sobey Art Award, Canada’s pre-eminent award for contemporary Canadian art, was created in 2002 by the Sobey Art Foundation. It is an annual prize given to an artist who has exhibited in a public or commercial art gallery within 18 months of being nominated.

In addition to the $100,000 prize awarded to the winner of the Sobey Art Award, each of the four short listed artists are awarded $25,000 and $10,000 is awarded to each of the remaining twenty long-listed artists. (Note: for 2024 there are 6 finalists and a longlist of 30 - the website has not yet been updated to reflect this.)

Works by the six finalists will be on view at the National Gallery in Ottawa from October 4, 2024, to March 16, 2025.

Paintings by ECU alum Richard Nielsen (Diploma 1988) are included in an exhibition at the CDC Museum, in association with the Smithsonian Institution. The show, called Stand & Witness: Art in the Time of COVID-19, “brings together an international group of artists, poets, authors, and performers to help us understand this collective journey. As the COVID-19 experience continues to ripple through our memories, this exhibition serves as a witness of those times.”

Richard’s paintings are sourced from masked selfies of friends, many who have their own connections to ECU. This collection was shown as part of the ECUAA’s Gallery Project. “This journey began in March of 2020 when, while filling my apocalypse jerrycans with gasoline, I glimpsed my masked reflection in the service station window. I realized this was the new public face of our indeterminate future,” shared Richard. “I began asking friends to send me masked selfies to use as the basis for paintings.”

Several paintings from the initial collection will be shown as part of Stand & Witness, along with work from over a dozen other international artists.

The CDC museum is located in Atlanta, and the exhibition runs June 17 – October 25, 2024 in the Temporary Exhibition Gallery

ID: Richard’s painting, “Charlotte Kent,” shows a colourful portrait of a woman wearing glasses and a reddish-orange covid mask on the lower half of her face.

ECU alum Lara Felsing (MFA 2023) has a new exhibition running with Christina Battle, at the First Gallery at FAB (University of Alberta). Until July 6, those in Edmonton can see the show, titled Listening to the Land.

An exhibition rooted in collaboration, conversation, and knowledge-sharing, Listening to the Land presents recent works by Treaty 6 based artists Christina Battle and Lara Felsing. Considering our relationships to land and community, as well as the potentials of artistic gesture during times of crisis, this exhibition invites viewers to engage in conversations centering caring and careful perspectives of approach.

Lara Felsing is an interdisciplinary Métis artist from Northern Alberta, Canada. Her practice explores the interconnectedness of all life on Earth and aims to bring awareness to the necessity of caring for the Earth and all living beings. Felsing’s material practice and research are approached with ‘two-eyed seeing’, with one eye looking through a lens of Indigenous teachings and the other through a lens of Western knowledge.

ID: The poster for the exhibition is divided into two images of equal size, stacked on top of each other. The one above is a purple-saturated image of a flower, overlaid with bright pink text that reads:

The fruits of the most recent Shumka x AIRS (Artists in Residence Studio Program) partnership are available for viewing, now until May 27 at the VSB Education Centre.

Guided by artist and ECU alum Kelsie Grazier (BFA, 2013), students from Pierre Elliott Trudeau Elementary School have produced works that connect them with their own sensory experience and promote mindfulness. Kelsie was one of 22 artists to receive a paid 24-week residency with a VSB school.

AIRS Artistic Director Maggie Milne says the exhibition, titled Imprints of Belonging, “celebrates student art and learning with AIRS from 15 studios with 22 artists in VSB schools over the 2024/5 year. It presents a selection of prints, drawings, sculpture, film animations, textile works and poetry that showcase the capacity of art to cultivate and express - in beautiful, startling, and authentic ways - our deepest human need for meaningful relationships, reciprocity and belonging . These works are both profound and joyful, and offer up ways to imagine and live into a more just and compassionate world.”

Image credit: Justice NOW for MMIW by ECU alum Lou-ann Neel (BFA, 2015)

May 5 is Red Dress Day, a day in honour and memoriam for missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW), but also a call to action. Femicide and violence disproportionately affects Indigenous women, two-spirit and gender diverse folks in Canada. This is one of many ugly results of colonialism and the residential school system. MMIW demand justice – and this day of visibility and awareness should serve as a stark reminder.
