Arts Umbrella is a not-for-profit arts education centre for young people ages 2-22 with locations in
For National Indigenous Peoples Day, Arts Umbrella is celebrating Indigenous culture and heritage by featuring one of our Creative Launchpad scholarship students, Taea Rattlesnake.
Taea is a theatre student of the Ermineskin Cree Nation in Maskwacis, Alberta and was gifted a Cree name by an elder, making her full name, Taea Kihew Iskwew Rattlesnake.
"Being Mixed Indigenous, I find there's a disconnect sometimes in finding a balance of both my backgrounds and I'm excited when a story connects with me, or I can see myself in it," Taea says.
Part of both the Half-Day Professional Training Program and Musical Theatre Troupe during her time at Arts Umbrella, Taea, "can't imagine [her] life without theatre, and being able to tell stories that really speak to [her]."
Currently in her first year of Musical Theatre at St. Lawrence College, Taea is excited about her future and can't wait to, "start shaping her career in musical theatre - because that's always been the dream!"
And a special shout out to our generous supporters Jeff Mooney and Suzanne Bolton who fund the Creative Launchpad Scholarships. These financial awards are made available to students, like Taea, who are interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree, diploma or certificate in post-secondary studies across the spectrum of creative fields.
A reminder that Arts Umbrella will be closed for Victoria Day, May 20, 2024.

On a NEW EPISODE of Our City Tonight (Sunday 1030am on CHEKTV), we welcome back our "Kindness Ambassador" David McCann for another "Acts of Kindness" segment. This time, it's the inspirational story of Arts Umbrella on Granville Island and the co-founder, Carol Henriquez who, along with a few girlfriends 45 years ago, had an idea of a place where young people could cultivate their interests in dance, theatre, art and design. Today, this non-profit has 3 locations. It is an amazing story.
Thanks to David and Creekhouse Industries on Granville Island for their support of these segments!

Our Story
Inspiring Creativity. For Good.
Arts Umbrella believes that art is powerful, that it can change a child’s life. That’s why Arts Umbrella’s programs in Dance, Theatre, and Art & Design are made accessible to all young people—through bursaries, scholarships, and donor-funded community programs. This year, Arts Umbrella will serve more than 24,000 students, with 80% participating at little to no cost. Since 1979, Arts Umbrella has been active in its communities, inspiring kids to build their creative confidence and develop the building blocks for life: critical-thinking skills, improved self-esteem, and tools for collaboration.
An incomparable faculty of more than 170 professional artists and educators share our belief that inspiring young people through arts education is important. Children and youth across Metro Vancouver come to Arts Umbrella to learn to dance, paint, sculpt, or perform, but we are also giving them the tools to live a productive and inspired life. We believe that, through arts education, a child develops self-confidence, builds skills, and discovers their ability to create—providing limitless opportunities for the future.
Our pre-professional programs attract students from across Canada and around the world. Dance, Theatre, and Art & Design graduates present internationally, promoting Vancouver’s role as a centre for the arts. Arts Umbrella’s students are leading the way in industries like film, performing arts, and digital technology. But more importantly, students have gone on to become creative and compassionate citizens in whatever path they choose.
