We are so honoured to have been a part of this wonderful family’s journey! ❤️

“Dear Sarah and the entire Midwifery team 1,

We can’t express our thankfulness enough for your presence and care at our Charity’s birth! As we look back, we feel so much gratitude for how smoothly it went, (even with awake children!) and having you there was a true blessing.
Our family will forever be grateful to the midwifery team for your special role in the shaping of our family.”

This drink is great for supporting you in labour but also just as a yummy drink to enjoy anytime you want a little extra hydration!

Ingredients:
1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
2 cups coconut water
1/4 tsp sea salt
1 Tbsp of liquid calcium magnesium
2 Tbsp of raw honey (or more if you like it sweeter)
A few drops of rescue remedy (optional)

Instructions:
Mix all ingredients together in a vessel and stir until everything is dissolved.

This will keep for 1-2 days in the refrigerator or you can double/triple/quadruple the recipe and make a concentrate without the coconut water to freeze in an ice cube tray. When you’re ready to use it, take out a few cubes and add coconut water!

🍋 Lemon juice - relieves bloating, heartburn, nausea and it’s yummy!

🥥 Coconut water - contains electrolytes and minerals to replenish your hydration levels.

🌊 Sea salt - helps with muscle contraction/expansion and also contains electrolytes and minerals.

⚪️Calcium magnesium - these minerals help with muscle contraction and relaxation.

🐝 Raw honey - rich in minerals and natural sugars which are great for giving you energy

Bon Apetit!

Ticket sales run thru July - $15 each, 3 for $30 and 10 for $60 - each ticket puts you in the draw for all 3 of the lovely prize bundles, worth $1000 each.

You are welcome to donate without buying a raffle ticket - donations to Vines Art Society will go straight to the three campaigns.

We are also putting care packages together for Indigenous and immigrant families on unceded Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Səl̓ílwətaʔ, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm Nation territories in so-called vancouver, prioritizing P@lestinian, Congolese, Sudanese and Turtle Island Native life givers. You can choose to make an additional donation towards food coupons, herbal remedies and body care for postpartum support by Sponsoring a Care Package.

This is just one small and meaningful action we can do to dream together into a world where brown and black babies get to flower and grow with the land
🙏🏽✨🌱🌳

Keep on resisting the colonial delusions of separation and disconnection by witnessing, learning, spreading awareness, disrupting, caring, and letting our broken hearts mend by reweaving ourselves into one another. Our aching hearts show us that we are incomplete without eachother. All our lives depend on us showing up to this struggle for collective liberation.

This Canada Day, we honour the Indigenous peoples of Canada that have lived and cared for the land before we did.

We acknowledge that the land on which we live, gather, and work is situated on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Canada Day marks the anniversary of the confederation of Canada. This symbolizes the beginning of a new system of governance that systematically marginalized Indigenous peoples, appropriated their lands, and attempted to change and eradicate their culture.

For many Indigenous peoples, Canada day is not a day of celebration but a day of mourning, reflection, and resilience. To truly foster upstanding and moving towards reconciliation, we must acknowledge this.

Today, on Canada Day, we celebrate the spirit of kindness, diversity, and acceptance that makes Canada truly special. On this day, we are grateful for this country we live in but we also reflect and acknowledge the losses that were inflicted to get us here.

Did you know…

🩺 BC’s Medical Services Plan pays for midwifery care, including in-home check-ups in labour and after you’ve had the baby. You can self-refer to a midwife.

🏥🏠 With a midwife, you can choose hospital or home birth. If you opt for a hospital birth, you can also have access to pain management (ie. epidural). If you choose a home birth, your midwife will bring everything you need!

⏰ With these longer appointments, you get to know your midwives! This also allows time for them to give you the latest info in perinatal care and also provide all routine prenatal and postnatal tests.

👯‍♀️👯‍♀️ Midwives work in small teams and you will get to meet all the people who will be taking care of you at your birth. Should you or your baby require care of a physician, the midwives will arrange that for you.

🦠 Studies show midwifery clients have lower rates of infection, episiotomies, C-sections, forceps deliveries, vacuum extractions, and newborns that require resuscitation.

Our Registered Clinical Counselor, Lisa Brooks, is offering a postpartum support series. Check it out:

Day/Time: Tuesdays at 12:00pm

Dates: November 28, Dec 5, 12, 19, Jan 2, Jan 9, Jan 16

Location: 1475 W 11th Ave. Suite 205

The Space: For those who have not been to my office before, I work out of an apartment in a building in the Fairview area on the second floor. The building does not have an elevator so bringing a stroller may not be ideal. Please note that you do not have to bring your baby if you do not want to, this time is for you and you should show up however you need to/whatever is best for you.

Hybrid: The aim/goal will be to have the group in person as much as possible. However, given that it is cold and flu season, if someone is sick or has a sick baby and still wants to participate, we will switch to online that day. Out of consideration for all, please be honest about how healthy you feel prior to meeting in person. If you require this accommodation, please let me know by the night before (no later than 9pm) the session so I can plan accordingly and send everyone the link for the online meeting. Again, the hope and goal is to have in-person connection.

Cost: The cost for 8 sessions is $400. This works out to $50 per person per session. I aim to keep these groups small, intimate and therapeutic. Payment is made in advance of beginning the group. If you require a bill for insurance purposes, I can provide that in the form of weekly sessions and not for one amount in advance. If there are dates a participant knows they cannot make in advance please let me know so price adjustment options can be explored.

Introducing Bree, 4th year student at the UBC Midwifery Program. She will be working on Team 1 under the supervision of Sarah, Geny, Julia, Laurie, and Andrea. Welcome Bree!
—————————

My name is Bree Whittemore (she/ her) and I am thrilled to be doing my fourth year placement at the Midwifery Group in Vancouver. This will be a wonderful opportunity for me to learn and grow as a midwife. I especially want to thank the families I am looking forward to meeting for sharing their pregnancy journeys with me.
I grew up with a view of birth as a natural and empowering part of life. I discovered early in my degree in Zoology that I am fascinated by changes that happen to the body during pregnancy and postpartum: hormonally, physically, emotionally, and all aspects of fetal development. Pairing this with my strong desire to nurture others forms the foundation for my intent to become a midwife. In this pursuit I became a doula, started my own business, and became secretary of the Doula Services Association. My immersion into the birthing community has introduced me to the importance of advocacy for reproductive health – a trait I will take with me throughout my career as a midwife.
My journey as a midwifery student has taken me to the Sunshine Coast, North Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, and now Vancouver. I’ve worked in solo and group practices and have been a part of the care and birth of many families. This past summer, my understanding and respect for other professions in maternity care has broadened during my interprofessional placement with an OB in Burnaby, a GP in Abbotsford, the NICU at RCH, and the MFM team at BC Women’s.
My non-birthy passions include exploring the outdoors, running, reading a good fantasy book, baking (huge Great British Bake Off fan), and traveling. My Zoology degree has afforded me the opportunity to have some amazing experiences such as caring for baby rhinos and studying elephants in Botswana. I’m always looking forward to my next adventure, whether it be exploring the world or my own backyard in beautiful BC.
