Films driven by those who have lived the story. Lantern films are driven by those who have lived the story.
Lantern Films, co-founded in 2015 by Jessica Hallenbeck and Dave Shortt, was created out of our shared desire to produce critically important and visually stunning documentaries. We prioritize community consent and knowledge ownership, centering careful research and transparency.
Lantern is excited and very grateful to announce that the formidable Madelaine Russo has joined the Lantern team as a development financing producer.
Madelaine is a development writer and consultant for international documentary projects. Her eight year tenure on the Hot Docs industry team had her producing meeting, lab, and mentorship programs year-round. Prior to Hot Docs, Madelaine worked at Sheffield Doc Fest. She is equally a personal support worker, bartender, and ceramicist.

Since 2018, a team of artists has been working on a project called UNSETTLED. You may have seen a workshop of it as part of the Heart of the City Festival in 2018 or 2019, or an online presentation as part of Kickstart Disability Arts and Culture’s Still, Life, Digital Festival in 2020. Last fall (2023) the artists got together again for the final phase of the project: UNSETTLED the DOCUMENTARY. Created with Lantern Films, this is a moving piece about the artists’ experiences of coming together to create art and enact activism.
We are delighted to announce that UNSETTLED the DOCUMENTARY will premier at the DTES Heart of the City Festival on Thursday, November 7th at 7pm at the Carnegie Theatre, 401 Main St, Vancouver. Stay tuned for tickets!
--- > Big thanks to the Canada Council for the Arts for making this project possible

As part of the exhibition 'This Is An Emergency Broadcast,' Banchi Hanuse’s "Nuxalk Radio" (2021) film plays on the Outdoor Screen at the Belkin Art Gallery 9am to 9pm daily from Jun 21 – Aug 11, 2024.

Written and directed by Banchi Hanuse and produced by Lantern Films, "Nuxalk Radio" documents a day in the life of 91.1 FM Nuxalk Radio, a community radio station broadcasting from the Nuxalk village of Q’umk’uts’ (Bella Coola) established in 2014 with the slogan, “Lhulhamktulhs ala ts’ktaliwalh alh ti s-kulhulmcilh t’ayc n wa sulutilh ats (Broadcasting the laws of the lands and waters).”
Co-founder Banchi Hanuse outlines its overarching goal as the promotion of the Nuxalk language. Nuxalk Radio contributes positively to physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well-being while also asserting Nuxalk Nationhood by raising up our Nuxalk ancestral government, reclaiming and reoccupying our territory and promoting stewardship of our homelands.
Nuxalk Radio is the recipient of the Vancouver International Film Festival’s (VIFF) Sea to Sky Award and the Yorkton Film Festival’s Documentary Arts and Culture Golden Sheaf Award.

The radio is a tool. Through receptive listening and attention there is potential for the creation of a community of receivers. In the act of transmission, there is agency and responsibility that is at once collective and individual, that works with echoes, waves, reverberations, repetitions, cycles, and is only meaningful when received. This Is An Emergency Broadcast connects Indigenous political advocacy with the forms of communication offered by community radio, countering power chronicles of state and corporate media and, in its self-determination, offering space for reignited narratives.
A project with artist and activist Marianne Nicolson (Musgamakw Dzawada’enuxw), This Is An Emergency Broadcast occupies the Belkin space to share a history of Indigenous articulation, collective organization and opposition to colonial forces.

🌈 Tonight is the night Courtenay and Comox! 🌈
THE EMPRESS OF VANCOUVER is coming to the Sid today, April 14 at 7pm and a few seats left.
While the amount of hate this post has received is disturbing, hundreds of tickets have been sold and this means thousands of dollars will be put towards indigenous and non indigenous q***r youth who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in the Comox Valley. It’s the hate you see on this post that contributes to homelessness in the first place but it’s love from the community that will ensure our youth don’t fall through the cracks.
