Welcome to June! 🌺🌷☀️

We have lots of exciting events lined up this month - including a very special wine tasting on Tuesday, June 18th with the owner and winemaker of Ursa Major: Rajen Toor!

Rajen grew up on his family’s Black Sage Bench vineyard. This project began as a conversion to organic growing, sustainable cellar practices, and experimentation of the varietals that they have been growing for 26 years. Ursa Major has a large following and for good reason: every vintage is unique with no vintage being made twice, production is minimal and the wines are meticulously hand-crafted. So, we are always grateful and excited to get our hands on a few bottles to share with you! (By the way - did you know that there is also a Spotify playlist curated to go with each wine? Scan the QR code on the label 🙂)

The tasting is June 18th from 4:00-6:00pm and will also include some brand new releases - of which Marquis will be the first shop to carry! While the tasting is free, we do ask that you RSVP on our website to ensure there will be plenty of wine to go around.

We look forward to seeing you in store! 🍷

After ten days in Auatria and tasting through almost 1000 wines. There is little doubt in my mind the Auatrains are crafting truly unique and authentic wines. Chardonnay's that are not over oaked; rather pure and mineral driven. Pinot Blancs (Weisburgunder) that are smooth with stone fruit. Blaufrankish that will rock your world and Pinot Noirs that are stunning and are way less than red Burgundy.

Over the decades I have had the privilege of traveling to many parts of the wine growing world. For me, I have to place Austria in the pantheon of the world’s greatest wine regions. The plethora of small growers who craft unique, flavourful wines is truly staggering. They have thoroughly embraced bio-dynamic & organic, grape growing and wine making. When Spring arrives and unleashes the bounty of freshness and rejuvenation, we love to reciprocate. Tuesday, May 21st from 4:30-6:00pm we will be showcasing wines that are organic, hand-made, and pair exceptionally with the precious short harvest of BC’s treasures. We might even disclose some of our favorite (and secret) locations for foraging the best stuff in the metro area that compliments our wines perfectly.

🍷UPCOMING TASTINGS:🍷

For this Tuesday’s “Wines with Will” we will have a Chablis showdown focusing on two of exclusive, traditional-style producers!

Daniel Dampt:
150 years of winemaking and vineyard ownership with just over 22 hectares under vine, with holdings in Petit Chablis, Chablis, 1er Cru and Grand Cru. Vincent and Sebastien Dampt now operate the estate after absorbing experience from their father Daniel and Grandfather Jean Defaix. Favoring the mineral style, all the wines are fermented and matured in stainless.

Domaine Servin:
7 generations of winemakers and documented owners of Chablis vineyards dating back to 1547. Today in the hands of Francois Servin, the 7th generation of winemakers in the family, the style stays traditional with sustainable farming and restricted chemicals and intervention. The wines aim to be powerful and bracing, with ageability. Servin operates on 32 hectares of vineyards ranging from Petit Chablis, Village, 1er Cru and Grand Cru sites. Because of his commitment to purity, uses stainless tanks almost exclusively, with the only cuvee to receive any oak at all being the Vaillons, with 25%.

Two Chablis wines, two elite vignerons, same vineyard, same vintage. Which one will be your favourite? Stop by the store between 4:30-6:00pm Tuesday, May 7th and find out with us!

Tuesday’s Wine Tasting:
🍇🍇🍇
Next week we are featuring two amazing Marquis exclusives out of Oregon: Evesham Wood and Haden Fig!

Evesham Wood Winery, established in 1986 in the Willamette Valley by Russ Rainey and Mary Raney, is now owned by Erin Nuccio and his wife Jordan. The winery is renowned for its commitment to producing high-quality wines through the use of optimally ripe, low-yield fruit and minimal interventionist winemaking techniques. Evesham Wood continues to source grapes from select vineyards, maintaining a balance between estate-grown and externally sourced fruit to craft their distinguished wines.

Haden Fig is a personal venture by Erin Nuccio, conceived during his apprenticeship under Russ Raney at Evesham Wood. This winery allows Nuccio to explore his winemaking philosophy in a more intimate scale, emphasizing a hands-on approach and the expressive potential of minimal intervention. Located in the same fertile region of the Willamette Valley, Haden Fig reflects a deep appreciation for the unique qualities of the site and strives for authenticity and innovation in each bottle, providing a unique complement to the established practices at Evesham Wood.
🍇🍇🍇
Explore the terroir of the Willamette Valley and try these wines side-by-side; we know you’ll love them both! See you from 4:30-6:00pm, Tuesday April 30th!

🍇Next week’s wine tastings!:

1) Tuesday, April 16th from 4:30-6:00pm William will be pouring three wines from Lindquist Family Cellars! Lindquist was founded by Bob Lindquist after building and then selling Qupe wines. He focused on cool-climate vineyards to capture the purity of Rhone varietals (and Chardonnay) with balance and elegance. Bob was one of the original Rhone Rangers in California, utilizing old-world winemaking techniques to produce complex and sophisticated Rhone Valley varietals in underrated regions of the Central Coast. He was the first to produce a California Marsanne in 1987, first Syrah in Ben Nacido the same year, and first cool-climate Rhone blend in 1988. Bob is committed to biodynamic and sustainable winemaking to allow the climate and grape to dominate expression in the wines without adulteration or over-exposure. The wines are fresh and vibrant now but exhibit tremendous longevity in the cellar.

2) Wednesday, April 17th from 4:30-6:00pm, Rob will be pouring wines from Okanagan Fall’s Stag’s Hollow winery. Celebrating over 25 years, Stag’s Hollow is a family-owned winery in Okanagan Falls, producing some of British Columbia’s highest quality, most distinctive wines. The team at Stag’s Hollow has researched and sought out grapes, both new and old, suited to the area soils and microclimate. These include Tempranillo and Albariño from Spain, and Dolcetto and Teroldego from Italy. These unique varietal wines offer a new tasting experience for the Okanagan wine lover.

🍇UPCOMING TASTINGS:🍇

***Please note that our regular Tuesday Coravin®️ with William will be rescheduled to Wednesday due to a scheduled power outage this week.***
As such, join us on Wednesday April 10th from 4:30-6:00pm for a tasting of the Marquis exclusive wines of Veradad in Central Coast California made by Bob and Lousia Sawyer! For this project, Lousia courageously farmed classic Spanish varietals such as Albariño and Tempranillo with biodynamic techniques for purity of fruit, balance and structure. She also makes an elegant Cabernet from Paso Robles that will be poured.
Louisa Sawyer Lindquist (and husband Bob) started Verdad Wine Cellars in 2000, with a vision of making Spanish grape varietal wines grown on the Central Coast of California. Louisa started learning about winemaking working in vineyards on the East end of Long Island before moving to California in 1992. 2020 was her 21st vintage with Verdad. Lousia focuses on classic Spanish varietals like Albarino and Tempranillo, but also produces a juicy Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles. The majority of the wines are Demeter Certified Biodynamic as well as wines made with organic and SIPS certified sustainable grapes.
Wines featured will include:

Slide Hill Vineyard Albarino, Edna Valley - cooler climate from the maritime influence of Edna Valley keeps the Albarino refreshing with notes of citrus, lemongrass, white flowers and mint.
An excellent spring and summer wine.

Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard Tempranillo, Edna Valley - Full bodied with velvety tannin structure and ripe cherry and plum, rose-petals and cigar box.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles - Elegant and energized rather than overly-ripe, cherry and baked black berry with rosemary and thyme, to***co and light leather.

We hope to see you on Wednesday! 🍷

🍾Join us on Monday, March 18th from 5:00-6:30pm for an in-store tasting featuring the wines of Champagne Stéphane Regnault!! Stéphane will be in store pouring his four different cuvées: Grand Cru Dorien, Grand Cru Lydien, Grand Cru Mixolydien, and the Grand Cru Chromatique.
🥂
An aerospace engineer in his early career, Stéphane Regnault later transitioned to the wine world, working as a sommelier in Paris and London. Growing up in the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil, Stéphane’s family sold the grapes they farmed to large houses, but after many years of working in different industries, in 2007 he returned to the family home and immediately began to make changes: Regnault began to gradually implement organic farming upon his arrival at the domaine, the property has been certified organic since 2020, and he now uses a number of biodynamic preparations as well.
🥂
The family’s four hectares of Chardonnay are divided equally between a few highly celebrated chalky terroirs in their home village of Le Mesnil as well as the Grand Cru village of Oger.
🥂
Stéphane is also a jazz musician, and the labels of his Champagnes represent the improvisational nuances of jazz that speak to the style and structure of each wine. Each of his three single-parcel cuvées are complex representations of the site, multi-vintage wines on which he builds each year, as in a solera.

A very special tasting with the winemaker himself and an event certainly not to be missed. Be sure to RSVP on our website! 🎷🍾

NEXT WEEK’S EVENTS:

This Tuesday March 12th, William will feature exclusive wines from Elvio Cogno, one of Piedmonte’s leading producers, from 4:30-6pm!

Elvio Cogno produces a mere 7,000 cases a year of organically produced indigenous Langhe varietals from the commune of Novello, of which the winery owns about fifteen hectares. In the footsteps of its founder Elvio Cogno, today his daughter and son-in-law, Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore, direct the winery with four generations of winemakers and vine growers, dedicated to obtaining excellence that begins with the unique terroir to create wines that are famous throughout the world for their elegance, texture, and balance. Elvio Cogno has earned “Winery of the Year” by Wine and Spirits Magazine for 4 of the last six years.

Featured wines at the tasting will include:

Nascetta “Anas-Cetta”
Nascetta is an indigenous white grape from Novello that was almost entirely phased-out until its champion arrived: Elvio Cogno had the patience and passion to breathe new life into a grape that is difficult to cultivate and low in yield. It is a medium to highly aromatic grape with main characteristics of acacia, apple, citrus and honey. An early ripening tendency makes Novello the perfect cradle for this potential king of white Piedmontese grapes. Planted on only 2 hectares with a total production of about 1,500 cases.

Dolcetto d’Alba “Mandorlo”
Dolcetto is a perfect wine for everyday drinking, offering freshness, juicy fruit, fine integrated tannin and comfortable drinkability. About 1,000 cases produced.

Langhe Nebbiolo “Montegrilli”
From Elvio’s grandfather’s 1.4 hectare vineyard, the wine’s freshness and absence of oak make it clearly distinguishable from the Barolos, and is suited for early drinkability.

This is an excellent opportunity to try some of our fastest-selling wines before they officially land in store! Subscribe to our eNewsletter to be among the first to hear about exclusive offers on wines such as Elvio Cogno. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday! 🍷
