Sonography Canada recently became a member of HEAL: Organizations for Health Action, a national coalition of more than 40 organizations that advocate for action on significant health issues. HEAL uses a consensus-based approach that highlights the collective expertise and impact of the member organizations.

Heal meets four times per year to discuss health issues with relevance to the diverse member organizations and the populations they serve, while also participating in advocacy initiatives such as parliamentary days and campaigns targeting policy makers.

Sonographers are medical detectives, specially trained to perform these tests. They use their ultrasound training, technical skills, and understanding of the human body and its systems to determine if structures are normal or abnormal and adapt their investigation as they find clues throughout an examination. This information is then used by doctors to determine the necessary treatment or next steps for the patient.

The role of the professional Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is diverse and dynamic, and sonographers are active in many areas of healthcare. These allied health professionals are employed in various health care facilities. Hospitals employ all categories of sonographer; Generalist Sonographers often work in general diagnostic imaging departments; Cardiac and Vascular Sonographers may work in the cardiology or vascular units of tertiary care facilities. Clinics provide a variety of employment opportunities based on their patient care focus. Sonographers may also become educators, application specialists or sales representatives with medical equipment companies, or be involved in research.

Clayton Moss loved Remembrance Day.

A veteran of World War II, Clayton served with the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1939-1945. Born in New Brunswick, Clayton moved to Toronto following the war and at the time of his death in 2016, he was a resident at Sunnybrook’s Veterans Centre.

And when his family reflects on Clayton’s life, they remember his life-long passion for Remembrance Day.

“Dad was so proud of his service in the Second World War,” his son Richie says. “I can remember as a kid on Remembrance Day watching Dad polishing his shoes and medals the night before the parade.”

Richie says in later years, when Clayton couldn’t walk anymore, he would sit in a wheelchair to sell poppies regardless of the weather.

“He always sold the most poppies for the Toronto Legion,” Richie says.

While his family says Clayton didn’t talk a lot about his experience serving in World War II, they all knew how proud he was of being able to serve his country.

“He was a proud man. Proud of his country, his Legion and his family,” says his grandson, Paul. “His uniform was always in tip-top shape. He was a true soldier with a heart as big, if not bigger, than the medals on his chest.”

That heart for service and gratitude is one of the things Clayton’s family remembers most about him.

“He was always so grateful,” says his grandson, Perry. “And he was a proud and noble soldier.”

Perry recalls his favourite story about Clayton: “He got injured and they wanted to send him back to Canada, but he snuck out of the hospital to rejoin his troops. That’s who he was. He had to be with them.”

On Veterans Week, Sunnybrook wants to express our gratitude to all the men and women who have served our country. Your sacrifices for this country will never be forgotten.

11/11/2022

On this day we remember those who gave their lives for this country. We are forever grateful to all the brave souls.
