I'd like to share a humbling experience from my recent trip to Greece, on the small island of Chios. On my third day there, I visited a local bakery and decided to try a piece of baklava. For anyone unfamiliar, baklava is a rich treat made from layers of phyllo pastry, honey, and sugar. I indulged in two large pieces and was truly in heaven.
But here’s where the story takes a turn. After enjoying the baklava, I headed out to photograph a 600-year-old medieval village, using my cherished Nikon film camera, which I've had for years and love for black-and-white photography. Once I returned to my car, I set the camera down beside it, had a quick lunch, and then drove off—leaving my camera on the side of the road. When I got back to my rental, I realized the mistake and rushed back, but the camera was gone.
If you’ve ever worked with me, you’ll know how strongly I advise against sugar and how I’ve avoided processed sugar for over 20 years. I often ask my patients to cut out sugar due to its harmful effects on the body and brain. Yet, there I was, justifying the sugar-laden baklava simply because I was on holiday in Greece!
The impact of all that sugar was immediate and surprising; my mind felt foggy, and I couldn’t believe I’d left something so valuable behind. The rest of the day, I wrestled with frustration and that unmistakable brain fog—irritated and disappointed in myself.
If anyone happens to find a Nikon on the island of Chios, in the village of Mastic, please reach out. This experience reminded me of the real struggle of avoiding sugar and offered a firsthand lesson in how sugar can impact cognitive clarity.
