📌 The Indigenous Student Support Coordinator (ISSC) is responsible for planning and coordinating student education, prevention, intervention, and support efforts across campus and community systems for Indigenous students in general and specifically Indigenous at risk and those facing crisis.

📌 Of critical importance to this position is an intimate knowledge of Indigenous ways of knowing and being. Cultural competency, including an in-depth understanding of colonization, decolonization, land issues, cultural protocols, and settler/Indigenous relationships is essential.

📌The ISSC will possess a demonstrated ability to multi-task and manage a diverse caseload. This position requires excellence in the facilitation of on-campus and community referrals, care coordination, planning and crisis management.

📌 This position requires a Masters' degree in a related field (e.g., social work, public health, counselling psychology, child and youth care etc.) and a minimum of 3 years practical work-related experience managing and responding to crisis or critical incidence

🙌🎉On behalf of Etalew̓txʷ | ÁTOL,ÁUTW̱, the Office of the Vice-President Indigenous, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Paul Whitinui into his new role as the Special Advisor to the Vice-President Indigenous at UVic.

Paul, who is Māori, belongs to the iwi tribes of Ngā Puhi, Te Aupōuri, and Ngāti Kurī on his father’s side and Pākehā on his mother’s side. He completed his master's degree in Sport and Leisure Studies at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, and Doctor of Education (EdD) at the University of Auckland.

Paul has been a distinguished professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria since 2016. His work as an Indigenous educator and interdisciplinary social scientist is informed by Kaupapa Māori approaches, which facilitate and articulate Māori ways of knowing and being, alongside transformative grounded theory and praxis.

Paul has served as the Acting Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and Research for the Faculty of Education from July 2021 to June 2023. His extensive research includes a focus on education, schooling, physical activity, health, sport, leisure, and community settings, particularly from the perspectives of iwi Māori and other colonized Indigenous Peoples. Notably, he was awarded the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium Order of the Circle of Service to Indigenous Education in 2021. He has authored several journal articles, four books, and numerous book chapters, reflecting his commitment to advancing Indigenous knowledge and education.

🌟 🎉 Join us in celebrating and welcoming Carol Bilson PhD © (Mapuche, Quiche, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese) from Wallmapu, Chile, into her new role at UVic Office of Indigenous Academic & Community Engagement as the Indigenous Student Support Coordinator!

Carol (She/Her/Ella) brings a wealth of experience and passion to the community. She is currently a Ph.D. student in the program Social Dimensions of Health in the School of Public Health and Social Policy at the University of Victoria. She has held the position of Alt-Justice Coordinator at Victoria Sexual Assault Centre (VSAC) and Education Coordinator at the Victoria Women’s Transition House Society (VWTH) where she trained staff, volunteers, and fellow service providers on the issues of Intimate Partner Violence and Trauma-Informed Practices. Carol further facilitates cultural safety workshops (Co-Creating Decolonial Futures) supporting organizations to work in more collaborative and relationally accountable ways with Indigenous peoples. Carol has over 15 years of experience in community education and has developed multiple community workshops on De-colonization, Anti-Racism, Consent, Men's Wellness, Healthy Masculinities, and prevention of Gender-Based Violence for boys and male youth.
