Royal Roads University receives the largest gift in its history valued at $9.93 million, which includes two acreages on Salt Spring Island designated for expanded programming.
The gift to RRU includes waterfront gardens, an orchard of heritage fruit trees, an architecturally significant house, as well as $5.268 million for land maintenance and improvement, programs and events.
This donation was made possible through the generosity of the late Susan Bagley Bloom, an environmental philanthropist and long-time resident of Salt Spring Island. Her gift will benefit the Salt Spring Island community, RRU students, faculty and staff, and the broader academic community.
We're excited to partner with Salt Spring Island Farmland Trust and Salt Spring Island Conservancyto steward and care for the lands and collaborate with the Hul’qumi’num and SENĆOŦEN peoples of Salt Spring Island to ensure their interests in the lands are recognized and valued.

"I wanted to explore other ways of thinking about governance — for myself and for my own governance practice," says Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies student Kyla Epstein.
🎯 Her goal? A fresh perspective on the topic.
"...the whole idea for me was that I wanted to think about governance outside of the...discipline it often lives in. So, that got me to the Interdisciplinary Studies department at Royal Roads." 💡
And it's offered new ways of looking at governance.
🌎 "For example, in the course Global Perspectives on Indigenous Ways of Knowing (INDS515), I looked at alternative ways of decision making for boards of directors that were based on different Indigenous ways of decision making."

RRU alum Stephen Camp has been advocating for the inclusion of a standalone hate crime section in Canada’s Criminal Code for nearly two decades.
Camp credits his time in RRU’s Master of Arts in Justice Studies program with helping his advocacy.
“The program allowed me to do a ton of research in the hate crime domain that I’ve always wanted to do and to build up arguments for frameworks or strategies to improve society’s response to hate crime,” he says.
His goal is a little closer to reality this spring with Bill 63, the Online Harms Act, receiving second reading in Parliament.
