In the last ten years gynecological cancer rates in BC have increased by almost 50 per cent. That’s why we’re nearly doubling the number of doctors and cancer care staff who can treat people with reproductive-tract cancers. We're also adding more surgical and treatment centres to help more people get care faster and closer to home.

We're continuing to improve the ways we prevent, detect and treat cancers in BC. In fact, BC is leading the country in areas like cervical self-screening – with 55,000 tests distributed to people from February to June 2024. Along with the cancer-preventing HPV vaccine, BC could eliminate cervical cancer in a decade. These are some of the many actions we're taking to deliver better and faster cancer care now and prepare for our growing needs in the future.

One year ago, we committed to strengthening cancer care in BC. And we are already seeing progress. With more cancer specialists in place and longer treatment hours more people are getting the care they need. We’ve also improved screening to detect cancer sooner, helped more people with travel costs, and are building more care for people closer to home.

We continue to face big challenges: communities are growing and people are aging. Demand for cancer care continues to rise – more than 34,000 people in BC will be diagnosed this year. We're working to deliver better, faster cancer care now and prepare for our growing needs in the future. There's more work to do, but it's starting to make a difference.

We’ll continue to deliver better, faster ways to detect, prevent and treat cancer so people get care they can count on – and live longer, healthier lives.

"There is immense power in diversity and inclusivity. We should not only celebrate this diversity, but also protect and foster it. For far too long, racism and discrimination have marked our society, dividing us along the lines of race, ethnicity and nationality. It's our collective responsibility to change this. By embracing multiculturalism, we acknowledge that our differences empower us, rather than diminish us.

We have a lot to celebrate, but our work is far from finished. We need to amplify marginalized voices so they are not only heard, but given a seat at the table where decisions are being made. By working together, we can build a more equitable and just society for generations to come."

"When we lead with love, good things happen. And the enhancement of this program supporting youth in care is very important because our youth are the most vulnerable. They need this warmth, a blanket to cover them, to push them through the journey of life and all of its obstacles.

All of the youth and all the communities have put so much hard work and dedication into creating supports for our peers, for our loved ones, for our brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews and cousins.

It truly takes a nation to raise a single child."

Katisha is the elected Youth Representative for the Union of BC Indian Chiefs. She comes from the W̱ JOȽEȽP and St'át'imc Nations. Katisha holds multiple roles and advocates for equity for all Indigenous youth, who continue to be overrepresented in BC's child and family services systems.

Recent changes mean more current and former youth in care will have access to the financial, housing, medical and cultural supports they need on their journey to adulthood. We've also added an unconditional monthly income support of $1,250 for 19 to 20 year olds. At this age, former youth in care are at high risk of homelessness.

Tonight marks the end of the Hajj and the beginning of Eid al-Adha, one of the holiest celebrations in Islam.

On this day Muslims in BC and around the world will come together with family, friends and community to pray, exchange gifts and share meals. They will reflect on the values of empathy, service and sacrifice, which have helped make BC a better place. Eid Mubarak to all who celebrate!
