Impromptu concert happening Wednesday evening, 7-9!! (In TWO days!)

Friends met Grace Petrie up at Musicfest and we threw together a little plan for a show! Grace is a powerful voice in the British folk music scene: “Exploding onto the folk scene in 2010 with the low-fi acoustic guitar/vocal release Tell Me a Story, Petrie quickly attracted attention with her polemical folk anthems, acerbic lyricism and open-hearted performance style. Support slots for the likes of Billy Bragg and Emmy The Great soon followed, with The Guardian declaring her “a powerful new songwriting voice”.

Only a very few seats left to grab! Willie is a former/founding member of ‘Old Crow Medicine Show’, a current member of David Rawlings Machine (with Gillian Welch) and is slated to play Newport Folk Festival with them this summer!

Willie is a powerful singer, a storyteller, a guitar player rooted in the tradition of old time folk and country blues, transporting the listener to another time and another place. “I’m not trying to prove any point here,” he insists, “and I’m not trying to be a purist. There’s so much beauty in this old music, and it affects me on a deep level. It moves me and inspires me. I heard Leadbelly singing with the Golden Gate Quartet and it sounded fantastic, and I thought, ‘I want to do that.’ I heard the Grateful Dead doing their version of ‘On the Road Again,’ and it sounded like a dance party in 1926, and I wanted to do that, too. That’s the whole reason I ever played music in the first place — because it looked and sounded like it was going to be a lot of fun.”

For over two decades, Willie Watson has made modern folk music rooted in older traditions. He's a folksinger in the classic sense: a singer, storyteller, and traveler, with a catalog of songs that bridge the gap between the past and present. From his early days as a founding (former) member of the ‘Old Crow Medicine Show’ to his current work as a solo artist, he is a celebrated musician with a rich vocal range, a top interpreter of the folk canon and a highly skilled multi-instrumentalist, mastering guitar, banjo and harmonica.

Willie is also a member of one our absolute all time favourite bands, ‘Dave Rawlings Machine’, (composed of Rawlings, Gillian Welch, Watson, Paul Kowert, and Brittany Haas. And John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) has been known to play mandolin with the band occasionally!)

Willie will be traveling with his new string band, featuring fellow Old Crow alum Ben Gould on upright bass and Sami Braman on fiddle!
