Rising rates have stopped real estate investors from making the foray into new purchases. As rates rise, so do the requirements for the stress test - while prices continue to fall, the costs have increased in the form of higher interest rates and property taxes. This trend could continue until the Bank of Canada decides rate hikes are no longer required to tame inflation.

GIC payouts get supercharged as BoC hikes rates again. A GIC is a great way for investors to 100% guarantee their investment - as interest rates rise, banks increase the guaranteed rate of return on their cash secured investment products, such as a GIC (Guaranteed investment certificate) or the HISA (High Interest Savings Account). These are great products for individuals who are having a tough time with the volatility of the markets but don't want their cash to be destroyed by inflation.
