>> I had a really scary incident happen today at Sunnyside Park.
I have made a police report and I can only hope that this doesnāt happen to anybody else.
I went to the park with my one and a half year old son around 4:30 PM to play at the playground and run around the field. I parked near the pool and my son played on the playground there and there were people playing with dogs in the field and kids at the playground and other cars in the parking lot.
All of the sudden at about 4:45 PM it got really dark really quickly and I looked around and everyone was gone and there are no lights at the park. At this point my son was playing on the playground near the swings and the open field.
Then this man dressed all in black with a black hood on his head walked by on the path by the playground and said āhi thereā to me and I thought he was on the phone so I didnāt answer him, but then he said āhi thereā again and I said a friendly āhiā and he mentioned itās getting cold and I said yeah it is, and he continued on his way down the path towards the baseball diamonds in the direction of Cranley Drive. My son kept playing and then a few minutes later I looked up and this same man was standing on the path watching us. He said āhiā and I said āheyā¦?ā I said it sort of like what the heck, you already said hi to me a few minutes agoā¦ At that point I had a gut feeling we should leave. So I picked up my son and I started walking away towards my car which was parked in the parking lot near the pool so it was a bit of a walk from the playground we were at. As I was walking past the bleachers I turned around and saw that he was following us at a distance. I kept walking towards the car and started taking off my sonās winter jacket as I was walking so that I could get him in his car seat faster once we reached the car. I turned around every couple of steps to confirm where he was and saw that he was still following us. I unlocked the car, put my son in his car seat and when I looked up I couldnāt see him anymore. I ran to the driver side, got in and locked the doors and turned on the car which lit up the area with my headlights and he was standing about ten feet in front of my car.
I was so scared I just put the car in reverse and left, I didnāt even look at him or think about taking my phone out to take a picture of him or video record any of this, there was no time. I just saw that he was in front of my car and I focused on getting out of there.
The bad news is that I canāt describe him, I donāt know how tall he was, I donāt know what colour his hair was, I donāt know his race, he didnāt have an accent of any kind that I could hear- I honestly have zero details. He was in his early 30s maybe? in athletic clothes, all black with a hood.
I should have called 911.
Shoulda, coulda, woulda, right?
I could have gotten in my car and set off my car alarm to create attention and scare him off. I could have gotten in the drivers seat with my son on my lap and called the police. I could have gotten my phone out and documented himā¦ the list goes on. But I didnāt do those things.
If this happens to you please call 911 right away. I wish I could go back in time and call as soon as it happened.
I called the nonemergency police line a bit later and they have made a file for the incident. They are going to do drive-bys of the area when they can which will hopefully deter anything else happening in the future.
My son and I are lucky that nothing worse happened, I just hope this doesnāt happen to anyone else. I grew up in South Surrey/ White Rock and I have never felt unsafe here but what happened tonight shook me to my core.
Please be careful out there, everyone.
