Spring equinox has come and spring like weather is upon us! Last week we talked about how bugs have important roles and that even tho we can’t see them yet they are starting to wake up. Participants were encouraged to paint bugs they are familiar with and we talked about what those bugs do. We left some of these painted rocks in the community for others to find to spread a little joy and whimsey!
Have you found any of our Oshki-Giizhig painted rocks?
Smudge sticks (pictured) can be made with a variety of traditional medicines or can include modern additions. Assembled with care and full of intent, smudge sticks are used to help cleanse a person, bless a space or object by burning and waving the stick to spread the smoke. By nature they are compact and perfect size to hold although it is always a good idea to have a fire proof smudge bowl/plate/etc. to place your smudge stick in when finished.
TBT!
To warmer days, a beautiful day in June to be exact. We worked together to build a sweatlodge.
Sweatlodges are an amazing reminder of how quick things can get done when we have many hands working together.

Traditional medicines grow in many places. We bring our participants out on the land to help collect the medicines that we use on a daily basis. They get to enjoy some time in nature away from the hustle and bustle of the city while helping collect traditional medicines.

Often used as a tea and drank for its anti-inflammatory properties and is known to help reduce high insulin levels in people.
The ripe berries are often used to help flavour beverages and foods while the unripe berry can be ground and used in similar fashion to pepper.

Oshki Fun Fact of the day:
Tiny to***co ties are often hung over doorways or windows of a residence or any space you spend a good deal of time in for a number of reasons. These ties are representative of our prayers to attract that positive energy and to ward against negative. Everything from the collection of the medicines, to the preparation of the ties is done with intent and care.
A lot of thought and love goes into one of these little ties!

Adventures in summer - a tour of the petroforms with a Knowledge keeper who shared teachings and stories about some of the natural rock formations and rock arrangements that ancestors have made there. We were encouraged to spend time where we felt called to do so, to make offerings when we felt the need to, and most of all to enjoy the knowledge shared.
Summer is in full bloom and plants are in full foliage. This is the time that we make extra effort to get our participants out on the land. Time on the land can include harvesting traditional medicines or simply being present and in the moment while enjoying the sound of nature. Land based healing means providing multiple opportunities to engage in time honored cultural and mindful practices that will have a positive effect on the individuals wellbeing.
