A myriad of emerald greens colours create a pond of water with clear swirls, droplets of water and hand sculpted emerald green lily pads, koi fish and white water lilies. A deep green coloured pond that gives almost an air of mystery due to the similar colours of greens that nearly camouflage the lily pads. The deep greens mixed together give almost a grungy feeling to the piece.

TG: Is this your first foray into making tiny art?
GJ: “I have been interested in tiny art since I was a child! All the way from when I was
first introduced to dolls and dollhouses! I was steered away from creating miniature art once I reached post secondary education. However as soon as I graduated, I immediately returned to creating tiny art.”
TG: What do you like about working small?
GJ: “There’s a sense of wonder when working with small pieces of artwork. There’s
always a chance to explore how tiny you can go while being able to obsess (or
go overboard) about the little details.”
TG: Do the pieces in the exhibition relate to larger work you have made?
GJ: “Many of my art pieces are relatively small as I primarily focus on miniature art.
The Bodies of Water collection uses many aspects of miniature work that I frequently create such as flowers and polymer clay fish that I use in “larger” pieces like my koi ponds.”
TG: Why do you make this type of art?
GJ: “Creating miniature art always provides a challenge of, “how small can I go,” while
allowing me to explore all the possibilities to recreate the “look” of something. For example, shaving down moss can recreate the look of grass! I enjoy the creative aspect of trying to find ways to recreate things in a smaller scale. Creating miniatures allows me to challenge my skills and hone my abilities to work smaller and smaller.”
TG: Does your art tell a story?
GJ: “Most of my artwork is quite whimsical and dreamy and on a rare occasion,
sometimes a bit morbid. I’ve always found romantic styles of artwork the most
influential on my preferences of themes and colours. Most of my pieces can be
soothing and contemplative while allowing the viewer to take their time to enjoy
all the aspects of the piece.”
TG: What inspires or influences you?
GJ: “I’m often inspired by day to day life and the ability to romanticize things you
normally see. Miniature foods, plants, buildings and more being shrunk down to
these tiny scales brings a type of whimsy and joy that I think most people can
appreciate. Seeing tiny box rooms, miniature houses and buildings allows you to
appreciate every little aspect of the piece, that perhaps you could not enjoy as
much until you see it fitting perfectly into your hands. A few artists inspire me greatly in this aspect, but one that immediately comes to mind is Hayao Miyazaki, who is the Director and Founder of Studio Ghibli. His films greatly shaped my own style and allowed me to find wonder in the dreamy colours of his films. The brightly painted cels of his films will always evoke a myriad of different feelings based on their colour usage and I will forever be inspired by the films from their studio.”
TG: How do you make your art?
GJ: “The process of creating my artworks begins from simply an idea and then I begin
the slow ex*****on to creating it. Many of my projects require a lot of planning on
paper, research and testing of techniques and sometimes relearning old techniques I’ve forgotten, and then trying them again to see if I have improved. Sustainability has always been important to me and I pride myself in being as low waste as possible in the creation of my artwork. I also aim to be as low waste and sustainable in my at home studio when I create my artwork and when I ship my pieces. Fun fact: a lot of the “water” in the canvases for this collection are actually resin drops that I have selected and saved to place into the pieces. They add a really fun look to the water as well as evoking the “Studio Ghilbi,” feeling of bubbly and drippy water that you can almost grab in between your fingers.”
TG: What advice would you give your younger self?
GJ: “Being true to yourself is a lot easier without someone yapping in your ear to, “be
less weird.” Be weird!”
TG: What’s a comment you hear a lot about miniatures?
GJ: “One comment I hear a lot is, “Oh, I don’t know where to start,” or something
similar. And all I hear are excuses! Starting off small (pun in intended), can lead to so many other minis you can try to create! Even buying a box set with all the pieces included can seem intimidating to most, but just picking one piece from the box and working on that can begin your way to finishing the entire piece! Before you know it, you have an entirely completed box room! Miniatures are also much more accessible now with the boom of modern style miniatures. There are also tutorials which are super easy to find on Youtube now. Also from time to time, I teach workshops and smaller projects called “Make and Takes,” in the Miniature group, MEOW (Miniature Enthusiasts of Winnipeg). We have monthly meetings as well as other events in the year like our Show and Sale where we have a yearly show to display and sell our miniature works.”
Thank you Gloria for sharing this glimpse into your world of miniatures!

Canvas, acrylic paint, polymer clay, resin
A romantic mixture of lavenders and light indigo colours in a dripping pond of water with clear swirls and droplets of water and hand sculpted forest green lily pads, koi fish and blush pink water lilies. This lovely mixture of purples and light pinks evokes the look of a pond at sunset, when the waters slowly darken and the fallen light pink petals of a nearby tree begin to disappear into the darkening waters. It is meant to evoke a romantic and almost melancholic feeling.

Our visitors were in awe of these three dimensional pieces, and many were spotted trying to dip their hands into the water! Did you notice the special cake that was made for the opening? It was made by our immensely talented current artist, Gloria Joe!
Gloria Joe is an artist based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her work in miniature art had
manifested from when she was a young girl. She began hand making doll houses
out of paper and tape when she was a child, and creating miniature foods and
artworks as an adult. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the
University of Manitoba, School of Art, with a focus on Printmaking and a Minor in
World History.
She has always explored different mediums and styles such as painting,
ceramics, printmaking and filmmaking, but has consistently been incorporating
whimsical, romantic, dreamy and sometimes strange imagery in her works.
The little details of miniature art have always interested her. And the ex*****on
and creation of these little pieces will always continue to fascinate and inspire
her.
She currently continues to create tiny works of miniature art along with larger
landscape and portrait paintings, and wearable mini jewelry collections, and she is
currently focusing on a collection of recreating miniature homes based on TV or
Film. She also runs her Etsy Shop (https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/GloriaJoeArt) and occasionally teaches workshops on how to create a variety of miniature art.

While most visitors know that you’re not supposed to touch the artwork, it does happen. These beautiful gold frames have been so attractive and mirror-like, that sometimes people get a little too close. Fortunately our staff are wonderful at cheerfully polishing off those finger and nose prints off the frames in this exhibition!
Waterways: NOW features linocut and india ink works by local artist, Corah Enns .
In this time of climate uncertainty, we find ourselves questioning the future and sensing an urge to hold on to what was. Water is precious. Water is life. In sourcing these unwanted, thrifted (somewhat gaudy) gold frames, it is frame and art that present a direct dichotomy for the audience. The water is the saturated focal point of the stark, dead landscape. The frame speaks loudly, but, as water is crucial to all existence, it is water that is worth more than gold. The viewer is encouraged to consider the price of commodifying or destroying water sources. Enns wanted to capture waterways in and around Winnipeg, Manitoba, with the hopes of encouraging residents to do a similar tour in their community. What does the future bring for these natural arteries? This is the artist’s snapshot in time.
About the Artist:
Corah Enns is, primarily, a self-taught artist working with ink, linocut print and watercolour. She is a music educator and the Band Director at Ecole Dugald School. As a saxophonist and recorder player, Enns studied at Brandon University. With the Covid-19 restrictions halting ensemble music-making, she found an artistic outlet painting and drawing again, something that went to the wayside in adulthood. Since 2019, Enns participated in the Nature Studio watercolour course with Anna Mason, as well as classes at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Forum Art Centre. She was recognized with the 2023 Jean Wiens OJCE First Time Exhibitor Award through the Manitoba Society of Artists.
