Opening reception: 6-9pm, 11 September 2024

“The pluck of water” is a phrase the Irish poet Seamus Heaney used in his poem ‘The Diviner’ to describe the sensation experienced by a man using a fork of hazel wood to detect water hidden underground. Heaney’s words also aptly describe the pull of the artworks in this exhibition, which act like divining rods bringing us to rills of meaning and connections, beauty and questions.

This is a group exhibition featuring work by KC Adams, Alexis Auréoline, Jaime Black, Sarah Crawley, Chantal Dupas, Laila Fazal, Noëlla Gauthier, Ariel Gordon, Ted Howarth, Jennine Krauchi, Mathew Lacosse, Erika MacPherson, Tracy Peters, Chuckwudubem Ukaigwe, Katherena Vermette, and Diane Whitehouse.

St. Boniface Hospital's COVID-19 Time Capsule, a combination of letters, postcards, photos, and memorabilia provided by staff and patients of the hospital, relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be sealed, only to be opened in 2050. The time capsule commemorates the massive effort of SBH staff and physicians to provide care during the health scare of the century, and also contains a letter and instructions for the future hospital administration of the day. Our hope is to honour our people by reminding future generations of the dedication, resilience and perseverance that was demonstrated at SBH throughout the pandemic.
The pandemic-era artifacts were suggested and contributed by SBH staff and physicians over the past several months. They will be sealed in the time capsule along with postcards written last summer during SBH's Post-Pandemic Postcards project, which was funded by St. Boniface Hospital Foundation and saw specially designed postcards made available to those who wanted to express a message or memory. The initiative was designed to assist people with moving on from the pandemic.
Other items to be stored in the time capsule include photos, thank you cards, and COVID-19 test kits.
The Galerie Buhler Gallery, which partnered with the hospital and the Foundation on the project, has agreed to store the time capsule until it is opened on March 12, 2050 - the 30th anniversary of the first appearance of a COVID-19 case at St Boniface Hospital.

Sam and Gil made beautiful music for the film and will be doing a live performance.

04/25/2024

Opening reception: 6 - 8 pm, Wednesday 8 May 2024
Artist Talk: 27 June.

Draw we are together is an exhibition based on the short film “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying,” created by Natalie Baird and Toby Gillies and produced by the National Film Board of Canada. In this hand-drawn animated documentary, mother, elder, and narrator Edith Almadi navigates the grief of losing her son by following his request to “draw we are together.” The exhibition transforms animation ephemera into new artworks that connect themes of grief, memory, and imagination within the same cosmos, and shares the magic of frame-by-frame animation as well as the labour it requires. The film and exhibition are the result of ten years of creative collaboration with each other and in their community, following ideas and processes that grow from enjoying time making art together each week.

With the generous support of the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, the Manitoba Arts Council, and the Winnipeg Arts Council.

Operatic Recital Class from Desaultes Faculty of Music give their end of year recital at GBG 💚

01/23/2024

Join us on Thursday 8th February, 6 to 8 pm for the opening reception of exhibition Needful Stones. This exhibition of a series of lithographic prints and intaglio prints and drawings explores the relationship between humans and stone.

Jonathan Green’s powerful prints and sculptures treat stones as beings capable of influencing us. This opens up the possibilities rock holds, including that they might want to work with an artist to make a drawing. This contemplative exhibition invites us to see what happens when we pay attention and allow our intuition to guide us.

Green has long thought of lithography as a collaboration between stone and human. To print from the stone is to learn it’s quirks, it’s subtle responses or come across ‘ghosts’ of its history. The variegated texture of Manitoban Tyndall stone, believed to be created by creatures burrowing through the mineral, promises even more interaction – an inhuman agency. It demonstrates participation in what Jeffery Jerome Cohen has termed “an ecology of human-lithic enmeshment” (Stone: An Ecology of the Inhuman, 2015). Meaning, a relationship in which rock and human a/effect each other. This implies a boundary between animate life and inanimate life that is more permeable than we currently imagine.

The stones in these artworks are propped up, or, “shored up” as if the artist is trying to align or assist them through crude means. By working with stone, and of stone, Green is collaborating with a cold but (perhaps) sympathetic companion. One that has seen catastrophe before. More than simply inert resources to extract, copper and stone may help guide us through changing notions of time and place. Helping us conceive of blueprints beyond our limited frames of reference in the face of calamity.

As trained ambassadors of the gallery, volunteers warmly welcome visitors, provide information about the exhibitions, participate in special orientation sessions where they can frequently meet the artists, and undertake a variety of other tasks to ensure GBG’s smooth operation. Their contribution is invaluable.

GBG is open every day and shifts last either 2 or 4 hours. In return for volunteering 4 consecutive hours you receive a meal coupon and a parking coupon. If you volunteer for 25+ hours, we can act as a reference.

This is an ideal opportunity for students, who can study between gallery visitors and those seeking a quiet role in a meaningful environment. Volunteers are required to wear a mask during their shift.
