HMCS Chippawa recently hosted Garry Bell, and Paul Jacobs from Calm Air who were presented with CF Employer Support Awards in recognition of their support to S2 Pardeep Mathode.

Employer support for reservists is invaluable, fostering a culture of appreciation and understanding for the unique challenges they face. When employers actively encourage and accommodate reservist duties, they not only enhance employee morale but also strengthen the organization’s commitment to community and national service. This support helps mitigate the stress of balancing civilian careers with military obligations, leading to increased loyalty and retention among reservist employees. Additionally, businesses benefit from the diverse skills and experiences reservists bring, including leadership, teamwork, and crisis management. Ultimately, fostering an environment that values reservists contributes to a more resilient workforce and a stronger society. We commend Calm Air for their support.

On 2024/10/19 - 20 members of the HMCS Chippawa’s dive team conducted diving operations at West Hawk Lake in White She’ll Provincial Park, located East of Winnipeg. Dive members conducted several diving operations utilizing the “Shark Marnie Navigator” which is a diver held sonar imaging and navigation system.

In the evening of Oct 20 Chippawa divers completed a night dive, stimulating black out conditions.

Le 19/10/2024, 20 membres de l’équipe de plongée du NCSM Chippawa ont mené des opérations de plongée au lac West Hawk, dans le parc provincial Whiteshell, à l’est de Winnipeg. Les membres de l’équipe ont effectué plusieurs plongées en utilisant le système de navigation Shark Marine, un système de sonar et de navigation portable pour plongeurs.

On 18 October 2024 the Winnipeg 150 medals were presented to residents of Winnipeg who have made significant contribution to their neighbourhood or the city at large.

Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee, presented HMCS Chippawa sailors with Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy Coins for their outstanding work.
 
MS Voth was presented with a coin for continued dedication and exemplary performance. As the senior Non-commissioned administrator, she worked tirelessly to ensure that issues were handled in an accurate and timely manner despite continued staff challenges.
 
S1 Manchur was presented with a coin for her part in planning and coordinating the Band Annual Recruiting Drive to high schools and musical ensembles in Winnipeg. Her contribution to band recruiting directly enhance the band’s capability, and the reputations of both the unit and the Canadian Forces.
 
S1 Foltz was presented with a coin for high performance as a member if the Unit Dive Team. From exercise planning to ex*****on, S1 Foltz consistently ensures that the dive team members receive excellent training and support.
 
Lt(N )Dyck was presented with a coin for continuous dedication to the development of unit members, consistently demonstrating outstanding leadership, and commitment to excellence. His contributions have greatly enhanced the skills and professional growth of all members.
 
PO2 Cantin was presented with a coin for exemplary service training and mentoring recruits while displaying unwavering commitment to their development and success. Her leadership and dedication have significantly shaped the future of those under her instruction.

This month, Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee, visited HMCS Chippawa to observe our sailors practice and maintain their operational skills during a training night.

During his visit, Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee presented promotions to S2 King, S2 Rivera Jr. , S2 Kryvko, S2 Mathode; and awarded Cdr Cuell with a Canadian Decoration 3rd Clasp.
Ce mois-ci, le vice-amiral Angus Topshee, commandant de la Marine royale canadienne, a visité le NCSM Chippawa pour observer nos marins pratiquer et maintenir leurs compétences opérationnelles lors d’une soirée d’entraînement.

Lors de sa visite, le vice-amiral Angus Topshee a remis des promotions à Mat2 King, Mat2 Rivera Jr., Mat2 Kryvko, et Mat2 Mathode; et a attribué au CapC Cuell la décoration des forces canadienne avec 3e barrette.

Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee, Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, presents Retired Petty Officer Garry M. Weirs with the Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service. The medallion recognizes distinguished or outstanding service to the Canadian Armed Forces by civilian personnel. Garry Weirs received the award for his exceptional contributions to military history through his website www.forposterityssake.ca. Vice-Admiral Topshee travelled to Winnipeg to present the award on behalf of the Chief of the Defence Staff.

During his visit to HMCS Chippawa, Vice-Admiral Topshee also toured the Naval Museum of Manitoba where he took the opportunity to present a commemorative coin to curator Claude Rivard. This gesture highlights the importance of preserving and sharing our naval heritage, ensuring that the stories of those who served continue to inspire future generations.

Le commandant de la Marine royale canadienne, le vice-amiral Angus Topshee, a remis le Médaillon des Forces canadiennes pour service distingué au maître de première classe (retraité) Garry M. Weirs. Ce médaillon est remis en reconnaissance de services distingués ou exceptionnels accomplis par des personnes autres que des militaires. Mr. Weirs s’est vu remettre cet honneur pour son site internet www.forposterityssake.ca qui est devenu une référence incontournable de l’histoire militaire. Envoyé à Winnipeg au nom du chef d’état-major de la Défense, le vice-amiral Topshee en a profité pour visiter le NCSM CHIPPAWA.

Durant sa visite, le vice-amiral Topshee a pris le temps de visiter le musée naval du Manitoba et a remis sa pièce commémorative au curateur du musée, Mr. Claude Rivard. Ce geste démontre l’importance
de préserver et de partager notre héritage naval afin que les générations futures se souviennent de ceux et celles qui ont servi leur pays.

A Change of Appointment Ceremony for the Executive Officer from Lieutenant-Commander Alan Fillingham to Lieutenant Amber Frame was conducted at HMCS Chippawa on 17 September 2024.

Lieutenant Amber Frame joined the Naval Reserve at HMCS QUEEN in Regina in 2012 as a Naval Warfare Officer. Awarded her Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate in 2019, she was promoted to Lieutenant in 2020. In addition to service with QUEEN and CHIPPAWA, she has also served with HMCS MALAHAT in Victoria and aboard HMCS GLACE BAY.

She is currently employed with the local office of the Canadian Forces Conflict and Complaint Management Services at 17 Wing Winnipeg. She lives in Winnipeg with her husband Iain and children Hailey, Mya and Eoghan.

Le 17 septembre dernier, le NCSM CHIPPAWA a tenu une cérémonie afin de
souligner le changement du poste de commandant en second qui s’est déroulé
entre le capitaine de corvette Alan Fillingham et le lieutenant de vaisseau
Amber Frame.

Le lieutenant de vaisseau Frame a joint les rangs du NCSM QUEEN à Régina en
2012 en tant qu’officier de guerre navale. Après avoir reçu son certificat
de chef de quart de la passerelle en 2019, elle fut promue au grade de
lieutenant de vaisseau en 2020. En plus de ses années de service avec le
QUEEN et le CHIPPAWA, elle servit aussi avec le NCSM MALAHAT à Victoria et
à bord du NCSM GLACE BAY.

Elle est présentement employée au Centre de services de gestion des
conflits et des plaintes de la 17ème escadre de Winnipeg. Elle demeure à
Winnipeg avec son mari Iain et leurs enfants Hailey, Mya et Eoghan.

Lieutenant-Commander Fillingham joined the Naval Reserve at HMCS CHIPPAWA in 1994, after being ‘head-hunted’ by the Director of Music at the time. After a number of training courses and touring with the National Band of the Naval Reserve he was promoted to Master Seaman in 1999. Promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class in 2004, he assumed the role of Band Chief, but maintained his playing ‘chops’ through involvement in numerous high profile engagements including playing with the massed bands of the Canadian Contingent in the Netherlands and Germany in 2005 and organizing the prairie tour of the National Band of the Naval Reserve in 2007.

With the retirement of the Director of Music in 2010, he assumed the role of Director of the Music and was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Commissioned from the Ranks in 2012, he was promoted to Lieutenant in 2016, he was appointed to his current position as Executive Officer in 2021. Throughout his time at Chippawa he has also served as the Unit Recruiter, Workplace Relations Advisor, President of the Junior Ranks Mess Committee, Deck Officer and Supply Officer.

In his civilian career he is employed as a captain with WestJet and resides in Winnipeg with his spouse Erin.

Long-standing Naval tradition has the Commanding Officer rowed ashore by the ship’s officers upon their retirement. This tradition has extended to honouring distinguished members with the same courtesy with the boat crewed by their peers. Given that rowing ashore from Chippawa is impractical, distinguished members are taken ashore on the limber of the saluting gun.

While the departure of the limber normally marks the end of the retiring member’s career, Lieutenant-Commander Fillingham has requested that he leave his final parade the same way he started his first one – as part of the drum line.

Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Chaque année, le 30 septembre marque la Journée nationale de la vérité et de la réconciliation.

Cette journée est l’occasion de rendre hommage aux enfants qui n’ont jamais pu retourner chez eux et aux survivants des pensionnats ainsi qu’à leurs familles et leurs communautés. La commémoration publique de l’histoire tragique et douloureuse des pensionnats et de leurs séquelles durables est un élément essentiel du processus de réconciliation.

On 10 September 2024, The Commanding Officer and the Coxswain of HMCS Chippawa attended a Service of Remembrance at Brookaside Cemetery to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of D-Day honouring all who served our country.

Founded in 2016, the Navy Bike Ride (NBR) encourages the well-being of our communities and families by motivating each other to be healthy through cycling and raising money for the Canadian Armed Forces Community.
Virtual and in-person engagement has been amazing, with participation coming from all across the country, all working towards the common goal of supporting our Navy community.
With funds raised going to the Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund, Support our Troops, and Soldier On, this event continues to solidify an extensive reach and encourage riders from coast-to-coast-to-coast to come together and collectively support such important causes. Every year, we as a community show what we can do as One Navy Strong.

Créé en 2016, le Défi-vélo de la Marine (DVM) est bien plus qu’une simple activité: c’est une cause qui favorise le bien-être de nos communautés et de nos familles, au moyen d’activités permettant de se motiver ou de s’entraider pour être en bonne santé grâce au vélo et en collectant des fonds pour la communauté des Forces armées canadiennes.
L’engagement virtuel et en personne a été extraordinaire, avec une participation venant de tout le pays, tous travaillant à l’objectif commun de soutenir notre communauté navale.
Avec les fonds recueillis seront versés a la Caisse de bienfaisance de la Marine royale canadienne, la fondation Appuyons nos troupes et à Sans limites, cet événement continue de renforcer sa portée et d’encourager les cyclistes d’un océan à l’autre à se rassembler pour soutenir des causes tellement importantes. Une fois de plus, nous, qui formons une communauté, avons prouvé que nous sommes une Marine unie et forte. Chaque année, notre communauté montre ce qu’elle peut faire en tant q’une marine unie et forte.

On 13 Apr 2024 HMCS Chippawa held a Change of Appointment ceremony for outgoing Coxswain, PO1 Mendoza, and incoming Coxswain, PO1 Jaskiewicz.

Le NCSM CHIPPAWA a tenu une cérémonie afin de souligner l’arrivée de son nouveau capitaine d’armes, le Maître de première classe Jaskiewicz qui remplace le Maître de première classe Mendoza.

PO1 Mendoza joined the Naval Reserve in 2004 as a Naval Communicator. PO1 Mendoza’s achievements include serving in OP WAPITI and OP LENTUS; and holding the positions of Regulating Petty Officer, Operations Chief, Training Chief and Coxswain. During his time as Coxwain PO1 Mendoza helped maintain HMCS Chippawa’s strength and augmentation through the pandemic.

Le M1 Mendoza a joint les rangs de la réserve navale en 2004 en tant que communicateur naval. Depuis cette date, ll a participé aux opérations WAPITI et LENTUS en plus de tenir les positions de maître des réglementations, premier-maître des opérations, premier-maître de l’instruction et capitaine d’armes. Durant ses trois années dans le rôle de capitaine d’armes, le M1 Mendoza a su soutenir l’équipage durant les temps tumultueux de la pandémie.

PO1 Jaskiewicz joined the Army Reserves in 1992 then transferred to regular force army and served with 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, eventually joining the Royal Canadian Navy as a Port Inspection Diver. PO1 Jaskiewicz’s achievements include deploying in a 1999 NATO mission in Bosnia, holding the position as Regional Dive Centre West Chief, and Dive Task Force Commander in OP NANOOK-NUNALIVUT 24.

Le M1 Jaskiewicz s'est enrôlé dans la Réserve de l'Armée de terre en 1992. Il est ensuite passé à la force régulière de l'Armée de terre et a servi au sein du 2e Bataillon du Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, pour finalement rejoindre la Marine royale canadienne en tant que plongeur-démineur portuaire. Parmi ses réalisations, le M1 Jaskiewicz compte un déploiement en Bosnie en 1999 dans le cadre d'une mission de l'OTAN, le poste de chef du Centre régional de plongée de l'Ouest et celui de commandant de la Force opérationnelle de plongée de l'opération NANOOK-NUNALIVUT 24.

In his address to HMCS Chippawa, PO1 Jaskiewicz said, “the responsibilities of a Coxswain are significant, but I have immense faith in your capabilities and dedication each of you brings to Chippawa. Together we will navigate any course and overcome any obstacle.”

Le M1 Jaskiewicz s’est adressé à l’équipage et a mentionné que « les responsabilités du capitaine d’armes sont énormes, mais j’ai une foi absolue en les capacités de nos matelots et en leur dévouement envers le NCSM CHIPPAWA. Ensemble, nous serons capables d’affronter toutes les tempêtes. »

On 13 April 2024, NAVRES Western Region Command Staff visited HMCS Chippawa.

During their visit, Captain (Navy) McDougall and Chief Petty Officer First Class LeBlanc held townhalls to discuss the current interests of Chippawa’s sailors.

Durant leur visite, la Capitaine de vaisseau McDougall et le Premier-maître de première classe Leblanc ont tenu des assemblées afin de discuter avec l’équipage du CHIPPAWA.

NAVRES Western Command Staff also participated in an inspection of Ship’s Company and Change of Appointment ceremony for PO1 Mendoza and PO1 Jaskiewicz.

L’équipe de commandement de la région de l’ouest a aussi participé à l’inspection de l’équipage et à la cérémonie de changement de capitaine d’armes.

Bravo Zulu to PO2 Zurbriggen for being awarded for his outstanding athleticism and years of service.

Bravo Zulu au M2 Zurbriggen pour ses années de service et son niveau d’athlétisme exemplaire.

PO2 Zurbriggen achieved FORCE Level Platinum on his Force Test, an honour reserved for the top 0.1% of the CAF. He was also awarded a Canadian Forces’ Decoration 1st Clasp for 22 years of service.

Le M2 Zurbriggen a reçu le niveau Platine lors du test FORCE, un honneur réservé à seulement 0.1% des membres des Forces armées canadiennes. Il a aussi reçu sa première barrette pour 22 années de service.

HMCS Chippawa presented the following unit awards for exemplary performance: Sailor of the Year to S1 Cryderman, the Chief Award to PO1 Green, Top Junior Officer to SLt Lui, and Top Recruit to NCdt Nguyen.

Captain (Navy) Janet McDougall and Commander Michael Cuell presented Damon Murchison, CEO of IG Wealth Management a Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Employment Support Award in Winnipeg, Man. on April 17, 2024.

The award was presented to Mr. Murchison at the Fort Garry Hotel to provide recognition to IG Wealth Management for their support of CAF reservists and in particular, Lieutenant (Navy) [Lt(N)] Daniel Carmody.

For the second time in five years, IG Wealth Management allowed their employee and Naval Reservist, Lt(N) Carmody (who works at IG as a wealth specialist) to deploy twice to the Middle East. Lt(N) Carmody deployed in October of 2018 to Bahrain while serving on Operation (Op) FOUNDATION, and most recently (and on short notice) in Fall of 2022 to support Op CALUMET, a peacekeeping mission in Egypt.

IG Wealth Management has an agile and robust human resources policy. The policy allows reservists to complete military deployments and training in support of Canada while maintaining their civilian employment. The skills acquired by reservists through their service in the CAF are often viewed as beneficial and complementary to their respective careers.

Le capitaine de vaisseau Janet McDougall et le capitaine de frégate Michael Cuell ont remis à Damon Murchison, PDG d'IG Wealth Management, un prix de soutien à l'emploi des Forces armées canadiennes (FAC) à Winnipeg, au Manitoba, le 17 avril 2024.

Le prix a été remis à M. Murchison à l'hôtel Fort Garry afin de souligner le soutien apporté par IG Wealth Management aux réservistes des FAC et, en particulier, au lieutenant de vaisseau Daniel Carmody.

Pour la deuxième fois en cinq ans, IG Wealth Management a permis à son employé et réserviste de la marine, le Ltv Carmody (qui travaille à IG en tant que spécialiste du patrimoine) d'être déployé deux fois au Moyen-Orient. Le Ltv Carmody a été déployé en octobre 2018 à Bahreïn dans le cadre de l'opération (Op) FOUNDATION, et plus récemment (et à court préavis) à l'automne 2022 pour soutenir l'Op CALUMET, une mission de maintien de la paix en Égypte.

IG Wealth Management dispose d'une politique de ressources humaines agile et solide. Cette politique permet aux réservistes d'effectuer des déploiements militaires et de suivre une formation à l'appui du Canada tout en conservant leur emploi civil. Les compétences acquises par les réservistes au cours de leur service dans les FAC sont souvent considérées comme bénéfiques et complémentaires à leurs carrières respectives.
