Art by Leslie Franklin
Leslie Franklin works in alcohol ink or watercolour on yupo or panel board.
Henrietta!
Hope to see some of these soon. I put up a bee house (condo?) and I’m trying to morph my lawn over to clover.
‘Swine and Dandy’ Such sweet, comical faces need whimsical pops of colour.
‘Let’s Gopher Lunch’ will be scampering down to Pulse Gallery tomorrow. Alcohol ink on yupo, 12x12. Thank you Grant Luther for the reference images.
‘When Athabasca Falls’ has made its way to Webster Gallery in Calgary. Alcohol ink on aluminum panel.
The name Clifford came to mind when I was working on him. Sorry to all Cliffords who take offence but I think he’s super cute with his wavy ears.
New cityscape at a show called Wanderlust in the lobby of until February 7th. Lots of beautiful pieces courtesy of artists. Check it out.
It’s on my bucket list to go to Churchill, MB and take reference pics of the bears. Until then, the poses and colours come from my head.
Painted in memory of Dr Michelle Bailes. May she rest in peace.
The sound that a red wing blackbird makes takes me right back to my childhood. We had moved into a new development and there were still undeveloped areas nearby of fields filled with wildflowers, birds and butterflies. I always thought their song sounded like a referee whistle.
Another Canadian shield landscape. I was drawn to paint this one because of the lighting on the rocks.
‘Underwater’ started out as a river otter but with those furry cheeks, kind of morphed into a sea otter combo.
This is Black Lake in Nopiming Provincial Park, Manitoba. I’m not sure the name of the falls or even if they’re classified as ‘falls’. If anyone knows, please put in the comments!
This teeny 8x10 landscape shows everything I love about the Canadian Shield. It’s from my head so no reference location.
I saw a lot of these this summer. They’re a great subject for a cheerful, small painting. I used gold metallic but it doesn’t photograph well.
“Friends in High Places” Alcohol ink on canvas. When I use ink on canvas, I have to remind myself to use less ink and more alcohol. The ink can’t be wiped off so future layers make the piece too dark or muddy. Less is more on canvas.
“I Can’t Get Pasteurize” and that’s all.
Another late summer themed piece. Mom has left her fawn in the safety of “Cornfield Cradle”. Alcohol ink on clayboard panel.
‘Look What’s Cropped Up’. It’s that time of year on the prairies! I used white ink in the sky. I don’t normally use it because the inks become ‘chalky’ but it does make for good clouds.
Thanks so some great friends, I was lucky enough to spend some time at this beautiful place. Managed to get lots of great landscape reference photos. There was a bear sighting nearby but I was quite happy to not get his pic.
‘Chasing Butterflies’ Confession - I was merrily sketching out this fox and as I got farther along, I realized it was poorly placed on the page. Oopsie.
‘Tell Me That Story Again’. I like to think there is some form of communication between species and I often portray that in my work. I took this one to a more whimsical level. With the relaxed expression on the pig’s face, I thought he looked like he’d just enjoyed listening to the butterfly’s wonderful tale.
This is Tuna, one of my many grandpets. She’s a Sphynx; a hairless breed that people seem to either love or find creepy. Alcohol ink on aluminum panel.
Guinea pigs are just the most comical looking little creatures. Their lips when chewing and little wavy ears are too funny which is why I love to use them as subjects in small pieces. Did you know they aren’t from New Guinea and aren’t even scientifically a pig? Speaking of names, I don’t have a name for this little guy. Suggestions welcome! 🐾
‘Tunnel Vision’ is alcohol ink on claybord panel. I went through the Caddy Lake tunnels once on a Girl Guide canoe trip. That was a million years ago yet the tunnels remain unchanged.
Fresh off the easel, “Paws to Reflect”, alcohol ink on aluminum panel. I struggled with this one. Initially I had no background behind the bear but it seemed like not enough. Now I wish I hadn’t put one. I waste a lot of time overthinking.
‘When It Gets H’otter, I Go In the Water’. Acrylic and alcohol ink. River otters, found on the prairies, aren’t as fluffy as sea otters but still have adorable faces. They have such an inquisitive expression.
‘Staycation Vacation’ When I paint lake scenes with cottages, it’s from my imagination and not a reference photo. Once the foliage and ground is in, I immerse my mind into the location and paint how I would like the cottage and property to look. It becomes my own made up paradise.
Another art form - Pride Winnipeg. No dogs were harmed in this celebratory fashion statement.
