Morten Andersen was in the YFU class of 1978. His sports in his native Denmark were team handball and soccer, but they were not played at his high school in Indiana. Morten's YFU dad suggested he try kicking for his new school's football team.

Morten played so well during his YFU year that he was offered a scholarship to kick for Michigan State University. After four years there he was drafted by the New Orleans Saints.

Morten entered the NFL Hall of Fame in 2017 having scored more points and played in more games than any player in NFL history. Morten's willingness to try new things is the epitome of YFU spirit. Thanks to Stephen Rutherford for sharing this story!

Did you know that each exchange student in South Africa has their own Placement Support Person (PSP), who supports and guides them throughout their exchange? Our PSPs are volunteers from all walks of life, and many of them also assist us in other capacities, for example as orientation teamers, or to welcome students at the airport ✈🥰

YFU, or Youth For Understanding, is your ticket to boundless experience and cultural growth. We offer a variety of programs to bring you closer to the world.

1. churrasco (barbecue): Enjoy an authentic Brazilian barbecue with your colleagues or host family.

2. carnival away from the tourist crowds: Celebrate carnival in Brazilian cities away from the tourist crowds to experience the true energy and passion of this celebration.

3. fruit paradise: Sample as many exotic fruits as possible. Brazil is rich in delicious local fruits that you won't find anywhere else.

4. soccer match atmosphere: go to a soccer match even if you are not interested in the sport. The atmosphere in the stadium is simply incomparable, no matter which team is playing.

5. experience capoeira: Discover the fascinating world of capoeira, a unique Brazilian martial art and dance form with African roots.

6. forró dance nights: immerse yourself in the vibrant world of forró, a Brazilian dance style. Attend forró festivals that last until the wee hours of the morning and learn about the local culture.

7. coconut water on the beach: enjoy fresh coconut water directly on the beach and refresh yourself under the Brazilian sun.

8. futsal challenge: Venture onto the futsal field and compete with Brazilians, even though you may not have a chance at the beginning. The experience and lessons are worth it! ⚽🇧🇷🎉

It’s exactly two months ago when we welcomed our Inbound students from all over the world🇨🇭🌏.

Without a Host Family 👥🤝there is no exchange year that can take place.
Our Host Families are the key people that enable us to be world ambassadors🌏.
