Hey everyone! This week we will be starting a new topic! We decided to close out the semester with a post civil war Libya!

We will be starting the discussion with opening statements, and general debate. Let’s focus on the identifying each country's personal interests in the conlfict and try to answer the guiding questions at the end of the study guide :)

Reminder: Tuesday, 19h15, in CM4. Below I’ve attached a study guide with key background information on the topic and some questions that you should focus on for debate. Can’t wait to see all of you 🥳

MUN EPFL is back on campus! Following sanitary measures, we have gladly been able to hold our last two sessions on campus. We are delighted to see many new members join our debates, as well as many old ones return. These past two weeks our delegates have been debating as the Security Council , on the topic “The situation in Hong Kong”. We continue our debates each Wednesday at 19h15 at CM5 and everyone that wises to join is always welcomed!

Now that all presentations are being held online, you might be facing some hardships adjusting to it. In order to help you get through this, MUN EPFL board members are offering to listen to your presentations and give you tips on how to improve starting from now until 5th June. We have also written a guide on how to present online. Both the sessions and the guide are available in English and in French. Some photos from the Game of Thrones crisis we held a few days ago. We had some interesting events and battles happen. After many debates, the night ended with a battle in King’s Landing (Lannisters won). The crisis was supposed to continue next week, but due to the current situation all events are canceled. Once classes resume, we shall continue with our normal debates, and until then we hope everyone stays healthy!

This year’s Harvard World Model United Nations where once again fantastic and we particularly enjoyed meeting the Swiss Ambassador to Spain who had previously been appointed to Iran where he had negotiated on behalf of the US government.

Honored to meet the high commissioner for the agenda 2030.
We will proudly carry around the pin symbolizing 17 goals of the SDGs — among which is also goal 4: Quality Education, which for us as students, young leaders and association, but also in general should be one of the most important.

Some impressions of the crisis simulation Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) we hosted last week and to which we invited our friends from St Gallen Model United Nations

The topic was the civil war in Sierra Leone:

1999, Diamonds are traded for AK-47, the international community is helpless against the enlistment of child soldiers. People are dying on the hands of the rebels and the government had to be exiled in another country. What's next was up to us!


Delegates were some of the main negotiators of the peace accords of 1999: members of the government, rebels or United Nations SC. They tried to negotiate the halt of the illicit diamond trade and to manage their military forces in this simulation of one of the worst West-African Crisis.

BECOME A MUN EPFL BOARD MEMBER!

MUN (Model United Nations) EPFL is an association present on campus since 2004. Its original goal is to simulate the different organs of the United Nations: students, role-playing as delegates of various countries, defend the positions of their countries on international issues, thereby learning to speak with confidence and skill, gaining the ability to debate and negotiate more effectively! In addition to that, MUN EPFL has the ambition (starting this year) to widely expand its activities on campus: the goal being to establish itself as a powerhouse on campus in everything related to helping students develop their communication skills, public speaking and awareness of international issues and overall gaining a better understanding of the world of politics.

We are opening the recruitment for next year’s board! If you are interested in joining a dynamic, ambitious and growing association on campus, if you want to have a premium access to several events on campus, if you want a unique opportunity to meet talented people and greatly expand your network, then MUN EPFL might be for you.

We are looking for motivated people, with a sense of responsibility and initiative. Several positions are available: communications manager, event managers, graphic designer, etc...

Our first place winner and the wonderfully eloquent : Laura Sofía Segura !

"I'm a passionate Mexican and engineer in biotechnology, in love with art, tech and science. I decided to participate because I was taught and raised convinced about the power of words to spark change and deep thinking. I study MTE in EPFL, and I'm searching to position science and technology firmly in the political agenda, specifically in developing countries where the gap between science and society is skyrocketing, and is affecting health, education, the environment, businesses, and overall social development. It enrages me to think that this happens many times due to an abuse of power, but also because we underestimate and give for granted our freedom of speech to defend our needs and ideas."

“I’m an EPFL student, in my first year of Bachelor’s in Mathematics. So, how did I end up in a public speaking contest? Great question.

I’m originally from the Republic of Korea. My family moves around a lot, so I’ve been here and there... Seoul, Geneva, Rabat, and now Lausanne. The perpetual change of environments has made me adept to all sorts of verbal exchanges: in fact, I have learned to deeply appreciate them.

Indeed, my principal motivation for participation was to enjoy. To feel the thrill of communication. To enchant the audience. To perhaps be given the chance to meet Muhammad Yunus. To have fun!

In the end, the entire experience was valuable to me as an occasion to brush up on my public speaking and to meet new people. No, it wasn’t scary; yes, it was fun. I would certainly do it again.

My goal for the future is firstly to pass the year :) Then, to crack better jokes in French, to keep relishing beautiful proofs in maths, and to remain a communicator – to be someone who can do all of these.

Enfin, I would like to thank my angel Zineb for always being there for me.”
