Now included in our current show “Salutation” are works by Swiss-Spanish artist .kohli .

Kohli’s painting invites interpretation and open reflection from an imagery that emerges from the artist‘s sketches of objects, spaces, or memories. Admiring painters such as Philip Guston, Kohli, for whom painting is one of the highest artforms, is also inspired by form and its evolution. Playing with fixed compositions such as still life, he tests their limits by subverting them with humour and novel contexts. His works, at once strange and familiar, draw from fields such as psychoanalysis, free association, dreams and the unconscious.

Several new works have been added and are now on view in “Salutation”, our group show which runs until 14th September.

Joining the exhibition is Abigail Janjić (b.1989, Stockholm).

Janjić gently teases images taken from magazines, fabrics, canvases and colour blocks. Her scanner, which she says she uses “like turpentine”, is covered in
stains, and her source materials which she spreads out and reworks using Photoshop, are for her like a “distilling vessel”.

Dilution, distillation, and copying are some of the filters through which she puts her source materials hoping for a stratification which only her decisions can pinpoint for a moment.

This is Abigail’s first exhibition with the gallery.

Welcoming Diego Kohli to GOWEN!

We are delighted to announce our collaboration with Spanish artist Diego Kohli (b. 1991, Madrid).

Working between Basel and Valencia, Diego Kohli‘s painting invites interpretation and open reflection from an imagery that emerges from the artist‘s sketches of objects, spaces, or memories. In his works, Kohli suggests, at second glance, the over-interpretation of a combination of abstract collages. The paintings do not begin with a preconceived notion; rather the series are the result of a common thread that develops in the workings of the subconscious.

Admiring painters such as Philip Guston, Kohli, for whom painting is one of the highest artforms is also inspired by a fascination with form and its evolution. His works, at once strange and familiar, draw from fields such as psychoanalysis, free association, dreams and the unconscious.

Having exhibited internationally in numerous galleries and museums including the Kunstmuseum Thun (CH) and the Castello di Rivoli Museo d‘Arte Contemporanea, Turin (IT), selected works are now on view in our current group show “Salutation” until 14thSeptember.

Welcoming Fatma Shanan to GOWEN!

We are delighted to announce collaboration of Druze artist Fatma Shanan (b. 1986, Julis, Northern Israel).
With a focus on figurative painting in oil, Shanan’s works are characterized by theatrical and enigmatic views on pre-staged scenes, often set in Druze villages featuring traditional carpets, in which participants belong to various circles of her own life. Her art strives to deconstruct from definitions concerning the art of painting, as well as gender, national and ethnic identities. Through this deconstruction, she suggests fluid definitions that are able to permeate these diverse realms.

Shanan demonstrates a post-transcendentalist appreciation for the environment, blurring the boundaries between her body and nature. In her self-portraits, she embraces the rhythms of urban and pastoral surroundings, seeking her identity and creating a space for diverse self-perspectives.

Fatma Shanan is the recipient of numerous awards. Her work is included in many international private and public collections. She will be a participating artist in the gallery’s upcoming group presentation opening this September.

Often employing natural motifs and objects in her paintings and sculptures, the refined work of Tami Ichino (Japanese, b. 1978) composed of inner intuitions and visions based on the observation of nature, leads us into her personal, semantic universe, often influenced by her Japanese origins. Our current show includes several sculptural works by Tami which sit with the poetic, gestural naturescapes of French-Swiss artist Amélie Ducommun (b. 1983). “Salutation” is on view at Grand-Rue 23 this summer, running until 14th September 2024.

Opening reception: Thursday 27th June from 17h00 until 20h00

GOWEN is delighted to unveil “Salutation”, a group presentation featuring works from a range of artists, both local and international who are either represented by, have collaborated with or are invited by the gallery.

In a double play on meaning, the show’s title honours the high point of the year, a time of freshness and abundance and an homage to nature, or to universal rhythms. It also alludes to the gesture or expression of a greeting, between individuals, or the seeing in of a new exchange.

Selected works by other artists will be announced over the course of the exhibition which opens with a collection of pieces more akin to the lyrical, gestural style of abstract expressionism, later giving way to works which embody the principles of geometric abstraction or even figuration.

Spanning an array of materials and forms, works which include floral landscapes, botanical or natural elements, imaginary universes, the human body or notions of memory offer unique interpretations in a show which becomes a meeting place for artistic dialogue, association, and experimentation.

Working in mediums of embroidery, collage and painting, Sofia Yeganeh’s practice is defined by expressive and instinctive characteristics as she deals with personal themes based around identity, human nature and body, and the natural world. The natural form is a running thread in her oeuvre, particularly the female body and the way in which it is often depicted idealistically in collective imagination and contemporary culture.

Selected works by Sofia will be on view in the gallery’s next group exhibition later this year. Stay tuned!
