In the Thick of Images: Law, History and the Visual
Our international conference In the Thick of Images: Law, History and the Visual took place on 10 and 11 June. Featuring nearly 40 panel contributions, and three keynote talks, the event was a lively affair, fizzing with interdisciplinary energy and underpinned by careful, historically sensitive scholarship. Bringing together a global community of academics, both established and emerging, the conference presented a rich array of perspectives on how to think the relations of law, history and the visual - in various contexts, scales and timeframes.
The conference was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation as part of the project 'Imagining Justice: Law, Politics and Popular Visual Culture in Weimar Germany' (Project Team: Steven Howe, Laura Petersen, Nicole Schraner).
Critical Times 2024: Un/Seen
Last week saw the second run of the Critical Times summer school in law and humanities. Organised under the heading 'Un/Seen', and centred on critical issues around the nexus of law, politics and visuality, the school brought together a group of outstanding young researchers from across the globe for a full and lively week of seminars, talks, screenings and presentations.
We thank all participants for their openness and intellectual generosity, for the new ideas and friendships, and we look forward to future events in the series (stay tuned for further details).
Critical Times 2024: Un/Seen
Join us in early June for our next Critical Times summer school in law and humanities. The lead theme this year is Un/Seen, and we invite postdocs, ECRs and graduate students from a range of disciplines and backgrounds to immerse themselves in a week of critical and creative thinking about the interplay between law, politics and visuality.

We are pleased to announce the publication of the volume “Neue Adressaten des Rechts”, edited by Suad Salihu and Rüya Toparlak. The ninth issue in the series “Junge Rechtswissenschaft Luzern”, the collection presents ten new essays, all written by PhD candidates and postdocs at the University of Lucerne, exploring critical matters around questions of legal personhood and subjectivity. Critical Times 2023: Movement(s)
From 5 to 9 June, the institute hosted the 2023 edition of the Critical Times workshop.
Curated around the lead theme of “Movement(s)”, the event welcomed a cohort of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from across five continents for a week of intensive study and intellectual exchange. Through a varied programme including seminars, lectures, presentation sessions and a film screening, participants were offered a unique platform to think – deeply, critically and creatively – about contemporary issues of law, politics and justice, and about methodological practices and innovations.

We are currently inviting applications for our Visiting Fellows Programme 2022.
The fellowship programme is set up to support junior scholars (PhD students and postdocs) who wish to undertake a short-term research stay at the institute. The scheme is open to all working broadly on interdisciplinary topics at the intersections between law, the humanities and the social sciences. Focusing on critical and theoretical approaches, the institute aims to bring together a diverse group of scholars who read and think widely across fields, contexts and disciplines.
