Blood sugar has been poorly controlled, probably caused by lipid-lowering drugs.
Some lipid-lowering drugs will affect blood sugar; see if you have chosen the right one?
Studies have shown that pitavastatin has the least effect on blood sugar, followed by pravastatin; rosuvastatin, atorvastatin and simvastatin have the greatest effect on blood sugar. Therefore, pitavastatin is the preferred drug for the lipid-lowering treatment of diabetic patients.
Drug choice:
Type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with hypercholesterolemia and those whose blood lipids still do not reach the standard based on lifestyle interventions receive moderate-intensity statin therapy;
For very high-risk type 2 diabetes patients, moderate-intensity statins should be used based on lifestyle intervention unless there are contraindications;
For patients with type 2 diabetes without atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and other cardiovascular risk factors, if LDL-C ≥ 2.6mmol/L, moderate-intensity statins should also be used based on lifestyle intervention.

Today's Knowledge: Diabetes and the kidneys

Diabetes, hypertension, or a combination of both, cause 80% of end-stage renal disease globally.
Both diabetes and chronic kidney disease are strongly associated with cardiovascular disease. Controlling blood glucose and blood pressure can reduce associated risks.
The most effective strategies to reduce the impact of kidney disease in diabetes are to prevent type 2 diabetes and to diagnose and treat kidney disease early and effectively in people already living with diabetes.
Atlas 8e complications image kidneyKidney disease (nephropathy) is far more common in people with diabetes than in people without diabetes. It is caused by damage to small blood vessels, which can cause the kidneys to be less efficient, or to fail altogether. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Based on data from the UK and USA, up to 40% of people with diabetes will develop chronic kidney disease.1 Pooled data from 54 countries reveal that more than 80% of cases of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are caused by diabetes, hypertension or a combination of both.
Diabetes, hypertension and kidney failure are highly interlinked. On the one hand, type 2 diabetes is a leading cause of kidney failure, which is a risk for hypertension, and on the other, hypertension can often precede CKD and contribute to the progression of kidney disease.
Both diabetes and CKD are strongly associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and therefore, the major component in their management is control of CVD risk factors such as hypertension and high blood glucose (hyperglycaemia). It is important to control blood glucose and blood pressure to reduce the risk of kidney disease. Screening for abnormal quantities of albumin in the urine (albuminuria) and starting treatment with drugs that reduce the activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system when albuminuria is persistently found, even in the absence of hypertension, is very effective to prevent the development and progression of CKD in people with diabetes.
Screening for albuminuria should be done every year after diagnosis in people with type 2 diabetes and the same after the first five years in people with type 1 diabetes.

Does anyone else have people overreact to you being diabetic?

I called out of work yesterday due to a stomach bug. When I walked in today, everyone asked me if I was ok. My manager even asked if I went to the hospital. I didn’t have to. I managed to keep it under control. But I felt odd because no one else was concerned when a different coworker called out a week before for the same thing. I get it, diabetes can cause serious complications when sick, but it was a little overboard for a one-day stomach bug. Does anyone else have people thinking you’re dying over nothing?🧐🧐🧐

As diabetics, we are grateful for the support of those around us.But how should we support our partner?

EXAMPLE:
The quality of life of our SOs is often overlooked with diabetes. Being committed to someone with diabetes is an emotional roller coaster. It’s mentally exhausting.

My wife is constantly checking in with me, waking up to low glucose alarms, hiding fruit snacks everywhere, googling about healthcare routines, reading medical journals about stem cells, and going to doctor’s appointments with me because I’m bad at reiterating information.

Grocery shopping takes twice as long as it normally would because she reads the label on everything before it goes into the cart.

She knows how I will eventually die, and she knows it will be before her.

Shout out to the homies who have our backs. This disease is a burden on more than just us.

Do you think you could support the ones that support you?

Maybe a crazy question: Does music sound fast when your blood sugar is low?
I’ve looked this up a couple times but haven’t found anything about it. My blood sugar is currently low (already taken stuff for it so I’m just waiting for it to go back up) but my music sounds like 1.25x speed which isn’t a lot faster, but it does sound fast. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed or experienced this or if it’s just me because I haven’t seen anything else discussing this.🧐🧐

A share from a friend: Something I’ve learned recently…

I switched endocrinologists a year or so ago and she told me if you eat the fiber/veggies in your meal first it can give you better blood sugar throughout your meal and can help control spikes. I don’t know if that’s common knowledge or not but she was the first to tell me that in 10+ years of being a diabetic and it works really well! Idk if it would work for everyone but I just wanted to tell other people about it 🙂

The terrible experience of a diabetic: Difficulty speaking during hypoglycemia
My worst hypoglycemic experience was when I woke up one morning feeling like I was about to die and my family was in front of me trying to get me to speak. My vision was extremely blurry like my head was spinning, I was shaking and sweating like crazy, and any object I held in my hand felt like it was sliding out of my fingers. I was able to hear their voices and register what they are saying, but I couldn't respond back. They were asking are you okay, but I couldn't say I'm okay, I couldn't say anything. I could only make noises of discomfort. It felt horrifying and helpless. I started tearing up and crying a little. They measured my blood sugar and it was 30. They brought me juices to drink quickly and after drinking them, I immediately got normal. The first thing I said was "I don't know why I can hear you but I can't talk". I started speaking normally there and was alright.
The night before, I took a lot of insulin and didn't eat much. The lunch I had the day before was too much and my blood sugar was high, that's why I took a higher dose of insulin and didn't eat as much that night. I think my blood sugar was low for hours while sleeping and that's why I woke up like that. I've never had any other experience with hypoglycemia that was this intense, and before this, I didn't know hypoglycemia could make you unable to talk. Has anyone else experienced difficulty speaking while in hypoglycemia? Or have you ever woken up to hypoglycemia, what was it like for you?

A woman with type 2 diabetes shares her weight loss gains:

6 yrs ago I began losing 200 lbs which have stayed away. I am still losing but only am about 20 lbs over my supposed ideal weight. I have learned a lot in 6 yrs.
If you want to lose weight, keep it off, and never need to worry about it again in most cases, you must avoid sugar/carbs, which includes most highly processed foods and fast food. You also should eat some fat bc it satiates and doesn't cause blood sugar spikes like carbs do an hr later. Carbs keep you perpetually hungry which is why lowfat dieters are always hungry and snacking.
My last mammogram said my breast tissue was "not dense". Before it always said it was "dense". Not dense means they can see tumors (I had none, btw). This is probably why breast cancer is more likely in obese women.
Shoe size changes. 7 yrs ago I spent a fortune on orthopedic boots in size 10.5 WW. I'm now shoe size 7.5 M. No way can I make them fit now even with 5 prs of socks!
My blood pressure is typically now around 115/70. At my heaviest it was around 160/98.
My a1c was once 6.9. Its been 4.9 for some time now.
I'm on no meds for anything, unless you could supplements like vit D3.
My rings are all too loose, even with sizers on them!🤭🤭

How does Glucose Enter the Cell? 26/12/2022

How does Glucose Enter the Cell?

Cell biology is a fascinating field of science. But the molecules that work inside these cells make it even more interesting.
One such molecule in our cells is glucose. It is our body's primary energy source and fuels the cells like gasoline fueling a car. However, our bodies do not make glucose on their own. It mainly comes from the food we eat, and then the blood carries it to the cells in our body. [1]
The entry of glucose into cells is another fascinating process. Knowing this can help us better comprehend how cells convert it into energy. But what if we could make it a little more fun to learn? Let's explore how glucose enters the cells and see if we can add some zing to cellular biology!
WHY IS GLUCOSE IMPORTANT?
Glucose is a simple sugar (monosaccharide) composed of six carbon, twelve hydrogen, and six oxygen atoms (C6H12O6). It stores food's chemical energy in a stable form. This energy gets released into our system once the cells break down glucose.
Glucose is essential for the cellular life of almost all organisms. Most cells in our body use this simple sugar as the primary fuel source, along with fats and proteins. They extract energy from it via cellular respiration, which converts sugars into ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate). [1-3]
In our body, one organ that needs glucose the most is the brain. It is, in fact, our brain's sole energy source to do various activities. The neurons and their chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) need it to process signals.
Our brains cannot function properly without glucose. A lack of it stops neurons from making neurotransmitters. In the end, neurons struggle to send signals to target cells. [4]
As the body's main fuel source, glucose helps metabolize the foods we eat. It assists in almost all stages of cell metabolism, from creating energy to making hormones and enzymes. Once glucose breaks down, cells produce the energy-carrying molecule ATP. This molecule is an energy store and almost fuels every metabolic process in a cell. [2, 3]
Note: metabolism is the chemical process that enables our cells to convert food into energy.

Topic discussion: Is it selfish to have kids if one of the parents has type 1?🧐

A contribution from a mother: I'm pregnant, it wasn't planned and I've only known the guy for as long as I've been pregnant (13 weeks). He has type 1 diabetes and a few other illnesses. Addison's disease and another illness that affects his adrenal gland. I initially was going to terminate the pregnancy due to all of that, but the doctor told me the chance of the child inheriting these illnesses is low and the risk of diabetes is about 30%. That information made me stop and think. He is really against me keeping it, he thinks it's cruel and the child would suffer and I would suffer. What do you think?

09/12/2022

Contribution from a friend with diabetes: Recently, the effect of controlling blood sugar is not very good. The blood sugar index is 15.8mmol/L two hours after breakfast. I would like to ask what you usually do after eating to control your blood sugar.🧐🧐

Is Beetroot Good for Diabetes? 05/12/2022

Is Beetroot Good for Diabetes?

Often called a superfood, beetroot is a jewel-colored root vegetable enriched with essential nutrients. It is a popular ingredient in many healthy foods, including salads and juices. Beets also serve as a garnisher for various food dishes or drinks.

Most people think of beetroot as a healthy vegetable. And they are not wrong at all. Research suggests that beetroot does indeed have some health benefits. [1]

However, as beetroot tastes sweet and earthy, one may wonder if it can raise blood sugar levels or is suitable for a diabetic patient. But fear not—beets are not totally off-limits. Here is a quick overview of the health benefits of eating beetroots and how diabetic individuals can enjoy them.

Nutrition Profile of Beetroot
Beetroot is a nutritional powerhouse packed with powerful antioxidants and phytochemicals. Nutritionists often recommend it as a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Beetroot has relatively low fat and calorie content. One cup (136 grams) of raw beets contains less than 60 calories and very little fat (0.2 grams). [2] The below pie chart shows the nutritional contents of raw beetroot.

Does Drinking Water Lower my Blood Sugar? 01/12/2022

Does Drinking Water Lower my Blood Sugar?

Almost everyone has heard about the importance of drinking enough daily water. Those who have diabetes have also been told to monitor closely any food or drink they take in. Water is a drink like any other, so many people with diabetes may wonder how it affects their overall health and blood sugar level. Here's how drinking water can affect diabetes and blood sugar levels, and what's the best amount of water to consume per day if you have diabetes.

The Benefits of Drinking Water
The standard recommendation for water consumption that most people are familiar with is to drink eight ounces (236 ml) glasses of water a day, or 64 ounces (1.89 l). The report of The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine [1] says that women should consume 91 ounces (2.69 l) a day and men 125 ounces (3.69 l). Twenty percent of that water can be found in food, and the rest should be consumed as fluid. Almost any drink or fluid can count towards the recommended amount of water per day.

For most people and diabetics, in particular, the best way to get that amount is to drink water. Water's main benefits are what it doesn't have. Since it has no calories and contains no carbohydrates, it can be consumed without any worries about how it may affect insulin levels. So any diabetic looking for ways to stay hydrated would be wise to select water as a first choice.

How Water Helps me Flush Sugar out?
Drinking water can do more than simply keep diabetics hydrated. It can also help lower blood glucose levels [2]. When blood glucose levels are high, one of the ways the body attempts to deal with this is to remove the sugar in the blood through the kidneys. This leads to dehydration as more fluid is excreted to remove the glucose from the system. If someone drinks more water during this process, the glucose can be lowered by the kidneys without dehydration.

Dehydration also causes the body to slow or stop water loss through the kidneys, effectively making blood glucose levels static. To make matters even worse, the hormone that is released from dehydration [3], vasopressin, can lead to insulin resistance, which makes the body even less likely to reduce blood sugar and can eventually lead to type 2 diabetes. So not only does water help keep blood sugar levels down, lack of it can lead to another type of diabetes.

Top 6 Misunderstandings Following Taking Hypoglycemia Medicine 28/11/2022

Top 6 Misunderstandings Following Taking Hypoglycemia Medicine

At present, people with diabetes still remain misunderstandings about medication, enabling them to fail to control their blood sugar well. Against this backdrop, what are the common misunderstandings about hypoglycemic drugs?

TOP 1: Take medicine following the happenings of symptoms
People with diabetes are prone to estimate the quality of blood glucose control based on their so-called symptoms. Because blood sugar is often high without obvious symptoms, there is little difference between taking medicine and not taking medicine for a certain period. In this way, they believe that blood sugar can be controlled without taking medicine.

In fact, this approach is a sword to healthy conditions. If blood sugar is too high, they may not feel anything once or twice. However, people should imagine what garlic will be like when it is soaked in sugar water for a long time. Hence, it's too late to allow you to feel uncomfortable.

The dosage of hypoglycemic drugs is arbitrarily reduced and even stopped, which often leads to poor blood sugar control. People can control their blood sugar level with diet and exercise, which applies this situation to early detection with better pancreatic islet function, and milder illness. Most people with diabetes need medication treatment.

TOP 2 More eating, more drugs
The treatment of diabetes is a comprehensive process, covering diet control, exercise, and medication. Clinical practice has fully proven that drug therapy needs to be combined with diet control and exercise to deliver tangible results. The efficacy will be greatly reduced if the diet is not well-controlled.
