Nowadays, kids spend 10 times longer on their screens than they did in 2011.

They also spend an average of six hours and 40 minutes using technology, according to a Common Sense Media report from 2017.

This number has only increased during the pandemic when screen use grew by an additional 17%.

However, the excessive use of technology doesn’t come without consequences.

As Richard Freed, a child and adolescent psychologist and the author of Wired Child: Reclaiming Childhood in a Digital Age, puts it, "Our kids are being robbed. The type of manipulation and isolation persuasive technology creates pulls kids away from real-life engagements like family, focusing on school, making friends. There are adolescent cornerstones, and children are being pulled away from the lives they need."

Even tech moguls themselves have questioned the effects of excess screen time on their kids.

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs raised their kids mostly tech-free…

Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel have strictly limited their children’s screen time throughout the week…

TikTok’s CEO doesn’t let his kids (who were 8 and 6 at the time of the interview) use TikTok.

Even Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook and owner of Instagram, monitors screen time with his kids.

The thing is, these tech moguls who invented social media know how it is designed.

They know about the addictive mechanisms that keep our kids hooked on the phones hours on end.

Everything that doesn’t flash, glow and move fast seems "pointless"…

Your child shakes and freaks out when you take a smart device out of their hands or try to restrict their use of it …

Because these sophisticated mechanisms of smart toys play with your children’s brains.

Since children’s ability to self-control is still growing, it’s hard for them to resist the pull of these clever algorithms.

There is another problem with all this.

The negative effects of excessive screen use are NOT immediately obvious.

You usually only notice the consequences when your child has already developed certain developmental problems.

For example, problems with concentration, restlessness, apathy, aggressiveness, excessive weight, lack of social skills (to name just the most common ones).
