🌱 The new call for applications for the ERA Fellowships – Green Hydrogen is now open!

The programme supports the education of German and international master’s students in the field of green hydrogen. As a scholarship holder, you will not only receive funding for your study stay, master’s thesis, or internship but also have the opportunity to participate in one of the four working groups on topics such as hydrogen production, transport and infrastructure, market stimulation, and cross-cutting issues – even after the scholarship has ended.

Frauen fördern, damit sie langfristig Führungsfunktionen übernehmen und gesellschaftliche Prozesse mitgestalten können – dafür setzt sich der DAAD ein.

Mit dem DIES-Programm („Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies“) unterstützt der DAAD den internationalen Austausch und die Weiterbildung von Führungskräften in Hochschulen durch Workshops, Partnerschaften und Trainingsprogramme – darunter insbesondere Frauen. Speziell an weibliche Führungskräfte von Hochschulen richtet sich ab 2025 der neue Trainingskurs „Leadership Training for Female University Vice-Presidents“.

Last Call for the launch event of the SANDD initiative in Namibia! 📣 Sub-Saharan Africa has the world's youngest population. And many young people are opting to learn German. To assist universities in Togo, Kenya and Namibia in meeting the increasing demand for high-quality German courses, the DAAD is supporting the SANDD initiative (Sub-Saharan Africa Network GFL Digital) through its programme „(Digital) GFL Competence Network Sub-Saharan Africa“! The programme’s goal is to meet African universities’ high demand for academic training of German teachers and to strengthen the teaching of and research in German as a foreign language (GFL). In addition to focusing on GFL collaborations, the programme addresses infrastructure challenges and promotes regional collaboration among universities in Sub-Saharan Africa. The SANDD initiative is implemented by a consortium of five universities: the Université de Kara (Togo), Kenyatta University (Kenya), the University of Namibia, the University of Augsburg (Germany, lead), and Paderborn University (Germany). With funding from Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, the DAAD has been supporting GFL departments at these universities since May 2024

The kick-off event in Namibia will feature hybrid continuing education courses on digital competence and multilingualism for GFL teachers, accessible to participants worldwide. It will take place in Windhoek from 1 to 3 October 2024 and some parts of the event will be accessible online.

Frauenförderung hat daher hohe Priorität für den DAAD. In seiner Diversitätsagenda hat er sich konkrete Ziele gesetzt, um Chancengerechtigkeit und Vielfalt im internationalen akademischen Austausch zu stärken.

Millionen von Menschen sterben jedes Jahr an den Folgen von Infektionskrankheiten – besonders betroffen ist Subsahara-Afrika. Dort befinden sich seit 2021 zwei der insgesamt vier DAAD-geförderten Globalen Zentren für Gesundheit und Pandemievorsorge: das German-West African Centre for Global Health and Pandemic Prevention (G-WAC) in Ghana und die Central African Infectious Disease and Epidemics Research Alliance (CAIDERA) in Gabun.

Die beiden Globalen Zentren leisten in Kooperation zwischen deutschen und afrikanischen Partnern zukunftsweisende Forschung zur Bekämpfung von Infektionskrankheiten wie Malaria, Denguefieber oder Marburgvirus – Krankheiten, deren Erreger durch den Klimawandel vermehrt auch nach Europa gelangen. CAIDERA setzt dabei gezielt auf die Nachwuchsförderung und bietet nun dank DAAD-Förderung einen in West- und Zentralafrika einzigartigen Masterstudiengang mit Schwerpunkt Infektionsforschung an.

Take a little peek behind the scenes of the 2024 Berlinale!

For the newest DAAD Letter issue, we met Dominican filmmaker and former fellow of the Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD (DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program) Nelson Carlos de los Santos Arias at the 2024 Berlinale in Berlin. His most recent film 'Pepe' won him the Silver Bear for best director. Based on the real-life story of a male hippo called Pepe, one of three hippos brought to Colombia from Africa by Pablo Escobar in 1981, the modern-day fable reflects on identity, belonging, colonialism, and migration.

Manchmal lassen wir uns bei der Arbeit so gut gehen, indem wir einige Tage des Sommerausklangs hintereinander mit spannenden Alumni-Veranstaltungen verbringen.

Heute Nachmittag versammelten sich in unserem Hauptstadtbüro ehemalige DAAD-Lektorinnen und Lektoren zum Netzwerktreffen, um über ihre jetzige Arbeitswelt zu berichten. Der Informationsaustausch bei solchen Sommertreffen ist immer sehr lebendig und von beeindruckender Vielfalt. So haben wir heute Abend viel Spannendes über das International Office im Wandel an der FU Berlin erfahren sowie Einblicke in die Arbeit von Endangered Language Documentation Project bekommen.

Und am besten ist es immer, wenn unsere Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus Bonn dabei sein können: Sie geben minutiöse Einblicke in unsere Alumni-Angebote und holen sich ein direktes Feedback und Ideenpool zugleich.

In unserem Hauptstadtbüro fand heute ein sehr spannendes Get-Together statt. Die in Berlin und Brandenburg ansässigen Alumnae und Alumni aus Afghanistan, sowie einige Geförderte, hatten ihr erstes Netzwerktreffen. Die ehemalig Geförderten teilten ihre Erfahrungen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt nach dem Stipendienabschluss. Dazu kamen diverse Ideen und Vorschläge für bestehende Programme des DAAD sowie weitere Vernetzungsvorschläge. Viel Potenzial für ein engagiertes Netzwerk in der Zukunft!

Today is the first day of the 2024 World Water Week! 💧

It's an annual week-long conference on global water, championing cooperation across sectors and national boundaries. This year's week is focused on 'Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future.' To celebrate this event the DAAD-funded SAGE-Regional Centre for Sustainable Adaptation to Global Change in the Middle East sheds a spotlight on its students. Their work focuses on different aspects of water management and sustainability.

The SAGE Centre is mainly located in Palestinian territories with hubs in Jordan and Germany, promoting efficient climate and land use adaptation options for the Jordan Basin.

Digitale Bildung neu gedacht! 💡

Die digitale Bildungslandschaft in Deutschland ist vielfältig, aber fragmentiert. Das Projekt BIRD (Bildungsraum Digital) zielt darauf ab, Menschen, Inhalte und Werkzeuge nahtlos zu vernetzen, um medienbruchfreie, selbstbestimmte Bildungsreisen zu ermöglichen. Gefördert von der EU und dem Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung setzt BIRD auf ein interdisziplinäres Konsortium und den Austausch mit der Bildungscommunity.
