Argentine minister's surprise showing sets up presidential election run-off with right-wing populist 23/10/2023

BREAKING NEWS!
"Argentine minister’s surprise showing sets up presidential election run-off with right-wing populist"
With nearly all ballots counted early Monday, Massa had 36.7% of the vote and Milei had 30%, meaning the two will go to a Nov. 19 runoff. Most pre-election polls, which have been notoriously unreliable, had given Milei a slight lead over Massa. Former Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, of the main center-right opposition coalition, got 23.8% to finish third in the field of five candidates.

Amazon’s emissions ‘doubled’ under first half of Bolsonaro presidency 23/08/2023

"Amazon’s emissions ‘doubled’ under first half of Bolsonaro presidency"
New study published in Nature says period was as destructive as record 2016 El Niño drought and heatwave
The research is based on vertical profile measurements of emissions from small planes at four sites in the Brazilian Amazon, taking CO2 readings from 500m to 4,500m.
“Agribusiness in Brazil is looking to the Amazon to turn the country into the farm for the world. This is a terrible plan, not only for Brazil but for the whole world. The Amazon is a buffer for climate change,” said Gatti, who is a member of the Science Panel for the Amazon, which is dedicated to the region’s conservation. The analysis does not include the second half of Bolsonaro’s presidency, which saw even higher deforestation rates and fires.

Brazil: descendants of Africans who escaped slavery gain census recognition 27/07/2023

"Brazil: descendants of Africans who escaped slavery gain census recognition"
Data counts 1.3m quilombola, historically excluded population whose communities were founded by fugitive enslaved people.
The census counted 1,327,802 quilombola people spread across Brazil, in both rural and urban settings. The majority (68.2%) live in the north-east, where 74.5% of the total population is black or mixed, compared with 56% nationally. About a third live in the Amazon, where they act as “invisible guardians of biodiversity”, according to Rodrigues, and face similar threats as the Indigenous population there.
Only 494 quilombo territories have some form of legal recognition, and an overwhelming 87.4% of quilombola people live outside of these. Just 4.3% live on quilombos which have been awarded a land title, the final stage in the official recognition process.
Érida Ferreira, 35, is among the majority of quilombolas still fighting for their right to their land. As president of the Ferreira Diniz quilombo association in Rio de Janeiro, she hopes the recognition awarded by the census will help to design public policies that protect her community. She said: “If they move us off our territory, they kill our culture […] And protecting, respecting, encouraging quilombola experiences is to keep Brazil’s

Brazilian Amazon at risk of being taken over by mafia, ex-police chief warns 01/06/2023

BREAKING NEWS
"Brazilian Amazon at risk of being taken over by mafia, ex-police chief warns"
Alexandre Saraiva gives alert on organised crime in region ahead of anniversary of killings of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira
The alert came ahead of the first anniversary of the killings of the British journalist Dom Phillips and the Brazilian Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, whose deaths exposed widespread environmental devastation and the growing reach of organised crime groups in the Amazon.

Lima warned that if nothing was done, “the military’s fear [of losing control of the Amazon] will become almost a self-fulfilling prophesy. We will effectively lose sovereignty over the region and the region will be consolidated as the main narco-trafficking smuggling route in Brazil and to Europe.”
“Organised crime is diversifying into other illegal activities that Brazilian society tends to see as lesser offences,” said Saraiva, who commanded Brazil’s largest ever seizure of illegal wood in 2020.
“The mafia goes wherever there’s money. It doesn’t care if it’s environmental crime, people smuggling, co***ne. And what they see there [in the Amazon] is gold and wood that’s being sold for a very high price. It’s obvious that it wouldn’t take them long to get involved in this.”

"AP wins public service, photo Pulitzers for Ukraine coverage"
The Associated Press won two Pulitzer Prizes on Monday for its coverage of the war in Ukraine, earning recognition for its breaking news photography of the Russian invasion, as well as the prestigious public service award for its startling — and exclusive — dispatches from the besieged port city of Mariupol.
AP journalists were also finalists in two Pulitzer categories, for breaking news photography of Sri Lanka’s political crisis and for feature photography of the Ukraine war’s impact on older people.
For the public service award, the Pulitzer judges acknowledged AP — which had the only international journalists in Mariupol for nearly three weeks — for capturing notable images of an injured, pregnant woman being rushed to medical help and Russia firing on civilian targets.

More than any other sports paraphernalia, the Yankees cap has become its very own fashion trend, unmoored from the sport or the team it represents. Lifted by starring roles in hip-hop videos, celebrity endorsements and collaborations with Gucci and Supreme, the hat has gone fully global, crossing borders to lands where mentions of Babe Ruth and Aaron Judge will elicit blank stares — never mind trying to explain the “Evil Empire.”

The leaders are expected to discuss efforts to safeguard democracy, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, insecurity in Haiti, migration and climate change, including efforts to stem deforestation of the Amazon, according to a senior Biden administration official who briefed reporters about the meeting on the condition of anonymity.

“Here there’s also a split that’s much more, or as serious, as in Brazil – Democrats and Republicans are very divided,” Lula said. “Love it or leave it, that’s more or less what’s going on.”
