One to one’s are great for training focus, resting the mind through structured activities and creating a skill-set you never knew you had.
Mandala flow is a method we use at BBB to help break down knots in the stomach- whether they are from exams, a friendship breakdown, a house move, family trials.
By assisting in open talk through a calming medium, we hope to address some of the worries and stress that might be building up.
The end pieces are wonderful, don’t you think??

And who should not visit “when your Mother is out!”
The Kindergarten today enjoyed the story of THE CAT IN THE HAT by Dr Seuss.
Story time followed by an exciting costume based, role-play and then a relaxing colouring session.

Loved this particular role play session this week. The story travelled far and wide through the depths of a forest and out into the victory of a newly found community- secured and protected by its inhabitants 😃😃😃

Something for all parents. Deep breathes and focus on creating a relaxed and good spirited atmosphere. Don‘t let triggers take over you.

The holiday season is the perfect storm for meltdowns and tantrums. This can be SO frustrating for parents when they are simply trying to create happy memories for their children,
WHY???

(1) A child’s brain is more easily overwhelmed by sensory input (due to an underdeveloped hippocamus and thalmus)

(2) They lack the emotional awareness adults do. Children who can’t identify their emotions or their needs may get easily overwhelmed.

(3) No coping skills: It’s hard to manage your emotions if you don’t have the skills. These take time to learn and master

(4) Unrealistic expectations: there may be pressure to get dressed up, take perfect family pictures, and be in a good mood for meals and events when that may not be how they are feeling inside

Love this!

Girls Can Be... so many things! And, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

To encourage gift givers to think broadly beyond the stereotypes about the diversity of girls' interests this holiday season, we created a special "Girl Empowerment Holiday Gift Guide" with toys in a wide range of colors and themes for all ages from infant through teen at https://www.amightygirl.com/holiday-guide

For a fun board book by this illustrator that encourages kids to ignore gender stereotypes and celebrate their unique selves, we highly recommend "You Can Be" for ages 2 to 5 at https://www.amightygirl.com/you-can-be

For two inspiring picture books for young children that counter outdated gender stereotypes, we recommend "Beautiful" (https://www.amightygirl.com/beautiful-book) and “Not All Princesses Dress in Pink” (https://www.amightygirl.com/not-all-princesses-dress-in-pink), both for ages 4 to 8

Elise Gravel - English, the creator of this fantastic illustration, is also the author/illustrator of several children's books including "The Cranky Ballerina" for ages 4 to 8 (https://www.amightygirl.com/the-cranky-ballerina) and the graphic novel "Olga and the Smelly Thing from Nowhere" for ages 7 to 10 at https://www.amightygirl.com/olga-smelly-thing

SENSORY SEEKER VS SENSORY AVOIDER
https://www.funsensoryplay.com/difference-between-sensory-seeking-and-sensory-sensitive/

This chart gives you an overview of some of the main traits of a child who may be a sensory seeker or a sensory avoider (sensory sensitive).

SENSORY SEEKER:
- Can be loud and/or enjoy loud noises
- Loves to jump, climb, crash, etc!
In order words loves any movement that provides vestibular or proprioceptive input.
- May fidget a lot - constant need to move
- High tolerance for pain
- Loves to be touched and love to touch
- Can be a chewer and/or enjoy crunchy foods
- Prefer rough play
- May seem to have behavior issues

In other words, a sensory seeker is looking for sensory stimulation. Most sensory seekers are undersensitive to the input so they are always seeking more.

SENSORY AVOIDER:
- Fear of climbing, unstable surfaces, heights, etc.
- Sensitive to touch
- Hates to have hair brushed and/or washed
- Prefers to be alone or withdraws when there’s too many people/noise
- Picky eater
- Can’t tolerate certain type of clothes, tags, etc.
- Startled by and/or afraid of loud noise
- May have meltdowns in large crowds or unfamiliar places

A sensory avoider is hypersensitive - they experience the sensations more intensely.
They often avoid because it’s overwhelming for them.

And yes - your child can be both!
One child could be sensitive to sounds (noise sensitivity) but may seek lots of movement.
This is very normal.

If your child is showing signs of either and it’s impacting your family’s daily life, please seek the help of an Occupational Therapist.
