Munich, close to Northern Italy, has a strong Italian influence. It is sometimes referred to as the northernmost city of Italy. Nowhere is the Italian influence felt more strongly than in Munich’s legendary gelaterias.
The Ballabeni in Theresienstrasse is a Munich favourite with people queueing around the block on warm summer days. In the Schlachthof district, Del Fiore is causing a furore with some claiming the ice cream is better than Italian gelato. The Sarcletti on Rotkreuzplatz also has cult gelateria status. Peter Paul Sarcletti sold his first ice cream there in 1896. Today, the Sarcletti family offer more than 60 ice cream flavours.
‘Robata’ is short for ‘robatayaki’, which translates as ‘fireside cooking’ in Japanese. The cooking style uses hot charcoal on a wide and flat open fireplace. Zuma’s Robata Grill has become almost mythical, serving jumbo tiger prawns with yuzu pepper, marinated lamb chops with miso and the signature spicy beef tenderloin with sesame, red chili and sweet soy. While Zuma is inspired by informal Japanese ‘izakaya’ cuisine, the founder and creator is the German-born Rainer Becker. Zuma comes to Germany for the first time courtesy of The Charles Hotel, opening a new and delicious chapter for guests and visitors alike.
