I stumbled upon this place while wandering around the Barri Gòtic. There were some tables set up in a small square beneath a stone wall, so I sat down at one, as the ambiance there was amazing. I'm all about "old', so this was my definitely my thing. There were actually three restaurants sharing this space, so depending on where you sit determines what you will eat. ;-)

The waiter came out with a menu and wine list as well as olives. I was thirsty, so I ordered an entire bottle of rose wine, which came in an ice bucket with a stand. I decided on the salmon stuffed with Gorgonzola and tomatoes. Very tasty and filling. The waiter and wine steward were very good by European standards, so I have to give 5 dots for service. I think my bill was about 35 Euros. While I have had a better meal food-wise, the setting during this meal was one of the best I have ever experienced.

"EXCELLENT IN EVERY RESPECT.........."......food, wine, friendly service, atmosphere, and incredible value for the excellence of this first class eating experience.

El Salon is furnished in a comfortable, welcoming, homely manner, with hardly two items of furniture the same reminiscent of yesteryear but completely in character with the quirkiness that is Barcelona. The waiting staff soon became friends and looked after you like their long lost cousins, and brought you without much delay some of the best food we had eaten in 8 days in town.

Outstanding was the cod cooked to succulent perfection and served with a confit of tomatoes and potatoes boulangerie and topped with cheese. It was one of the best, most tasteful dishes that I have had the pleasure of experiencing in over 50 years of eating around the world at many of the top restaurants - truly special.

The two of us both had 3 courses, a bottle of a fragrant rose cava, sparking water, a dessert wine, and coffee all for €83.......absolutely staggering value for such a fine meal and culinary experience.
