Euroculture Groningen kindly invites any and all who are interested to attend the 2022 instalment of the Annual Liesbeth Brouwer Address!

Liesbeth Brouwer (1953 – 2006) was an active and inspirational lecturer who contributed significantly and creatively to the development of the Euroculture Master programme – not only at the University of Groningen, but also within the Euroculture Consortium as a whole. To honour her legacy, ALBA was established in memory of Liesbeth’s multi- and interdisciplinary contribution to the programme.

This year, NRC-Handelsblad correspondent, columnist, and European Council on Foreign Relations member Caroline de Gruyter will give this address. In her lecture, she will take a comparative perspective on the European Union and the Habsburg Empire, as she has also done in her most recent book (2021). She will attempt to answer the question of just how we should perceive the European Union in today's world. Can the EU fall like the Habsburg Empire did? Just how robust is the European Union? By using both modern and historical illustrations alike, she will provide us her answer on March 07, 2022, at 13:00!

There will be room for questions after her lecture.

Please note that this year, the Liesbeth Brouwer Address will be held online. The link can be found here:

The online magazine written by and for Euroculture Students is looking for contributions.

Find below the list of topics on which we would like to have your perspective as Euroculture students. These are broad topics designed to inspire you. You do not need to answer all the questions in the description, these are designed to give you ideas about the topics - you are completely free to interpret them as you like.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
Deadline: November 30th, 2021
Length: between 800 and 1800 words
Sources: at least 6 reliable sources

TOPICS:

1) The Geopolitical Importance of the Mastery of Technology: The EU Chips Act
During SOTEU, von der Leyen announced that the EU block seeks technological sovereignty which entails its own production of semiconductors. What is your take on this, is an investment worth billions of Euros worth it, especially in the post-Covid-increasingly-digital era?

2) Patterns of Engagement in Elections by the Younger Generations Across Europe
With different elections taking place across Europe, who the youth have been voting for is not exactly the expected outcome. Which parties have been their primary choice? Does it differ in each country, and if so, what do you think is the reason behind that?

3) Electoral Outcomes and the Future of Europe
Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Netherlands, Germany, Norway, and Iceland all held national elections in 2021, in many cases resulting in profound political change. What are the political consequences of the 2021 elections for national governments and/or the EU? What are the consequences for individual countries? What factors led to the electoral outcomes seen in 2021?

4) What is Europe?
What makes Europe… Europe? Is it the classical legacy from ancient Rome, the Christian tradition, the love for soccer, or something else? Is Europe a geographical construct, or a union of states? Is it the same as the EU? We are looking for insightful and personal perspectives into what is Europe, especially from non-European students. What is Europe to you?

5) 2021 in Review
2021 has been a rollercoaster of change for most of us. Lockdowns, vaccinations, elections, starting a Master’s or an internship. We would like to share some great personal stories from students, from how you got your visas to the impact vaccinations or university had in your life. Anything personal, really. For this topic, we also accept shorter articles, at 600 words.

If you have an idea for an article on any other topic, send us a pitch! Write approximately 100 words about your intended topic and why it is relevant and we will get back to you.

Send us your articles or pitches at [email protected] or via our Social Media accounts. If you have questions you’re welcome to email us or to send us a DM!

Dear All,

📣 We'd like to invite you for the panel discussion: "Populist Rebellion Against Europe? Contextualizing the current rule of law crisis in Poland in a European perspective", which will take place on Monday, 8th of November.

On 7 October 2021, the Constitutional Tribunal of Poland issued a ruling that is seen to fundamentally question the legal order of the European Union. It is the latest episode in an ongoing conflict between Poland and the EU on the rule of law. The ruling has raised questions on Poland’s relation with the EU: What are the ramifications of this ruling for the place of Poland in Europe? And how should we understand this judgment in light of a broader trend of illiberal, populist and Eurosceptic politics in Poland and the region of Central and Eastern Europe?

In this panel discussion, four distinguished speakers will address these questions and more from legal, political and sociological perspectives. The event is organised in the framework of POPREBEL, a Horizon2020-funded research programme on the rise of populism – in its various forms – in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).

The speakers on this panel are as follows:

📌 Mirosław Wróblewski, Director of the Department of Constitutional and International Law of the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights in Poland (Biuro Rzecznika Praw Obywatelskich).

📌 Michiel Luining, PhD candidate at the University of Antwerp, researching law and critical discourse with a focus on how Poland and Hungary change European law discourse.

📌 Prof. Zdzisław Mach, Professor at the Institute of European Studies; Scientist-in-charge for POPREBEL at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

📌 Dr Natasza Styczyńska, Assistant professor at the Institute of European Studies; POPREBEL researcher on populist Euroscepticism in Poland at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

The discussion will be moderated by Jan Meijer, research assistant for POPREBEL at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

📆 Date and time: Monday 8 November 2021 – 17:00-18:00

💻 The discussion will take place online through Microsoft Teams

📣In our second episode, we interviewed 2 alumni, Albert and Simon from the Dutch Culture, Creative Europe.

🔸Graduating in 2013, Albert spent his first and second semester in Groningen and Uppsala. Then he did a research track in Osaka. Before joining the Dutch Culture, Albert was a project officer of the European Commission, course coordinator of Euroculture, and even owned his small copywriting business!

🔸Simon started his Euroculture track in Deusto and went to Udine for the second semester. Different from Albert, Simon took an internship at European Cultural Foundation in the third semester. Before actually working for the Dutch culture, Simon worked as a trainee and finally developed his career there.

In this podcast, you will also learn about their thesis topics, one which received a considerable amount of attention, and how Euroculture helped them prepare for their current careers!

Want to know more about their stories? Tune in to our latest podcast!
