The Karo people are an indigenous tribe living in the Omo Valley in southern Ethiopia. They are one of the smallest tribes in the region, with a population of around 2,000 people. The Karo people are known for their unique body decorations and elaborate body painting, which they use for cultural and ceremonial purposes.
The Karo people rely primarily on agriculture and fishing for their livelihoods. They cultivate crops such as sorghum, maize, and beans, and also rear livestock such as cattle, goats, and sheep. Fishing is also an important activity for the Karo people, as they live close to the Omo River.
The Karo people have a rich cultural heritage, with traditional rituals and ceremonies playing a significant role in their society. They have a strong sense of community and live in small villages, with each village having its own chief or leader.
The Karo people are famous for their body painting and decorations, which are done using natural pigments made from locally available materials such as clay, charcoal, and natural dyes. They use these decorations to adorn their bodies during ceremonies, dances, and rituals. The body paintings often depict intricate patterns and designs, and are considered a form of artistic expression and cultural identity.
The Karo people have also gained attention for their unique hairstyles, which are adorned with feathers, beads, and other ornaments. These hairstyles are an important aspect of their cultural identity and are often used to distinguish different age groups or social statuses within the community.
In recent years, the Karo people have faced various challenges, including the impact of tourism on their traditional way of life and the loss of their ancestral lands due to large-scale agricultural projects and infrastructure development. Efforts are being made to preserve their cultural heritage and protect their rights as an indigenous community. #

TRIBE IN OMO VALLEY🚴
Known for their striking appearance, the fascinating Karo Tribe with numbers between 1,000 - 2,000 have extraordinary body and face painting rituals where they use colored ochre, white chalk, yellow mineral rock, and other natural resources to paint themselves. They are one of the smallest ethnic tribes in Ethiopia.
As in common with most of the Omo Valley tribes, scarification plays an important role in the Karo tribe’s body decoration. The men plaster their hair in tight buns (previously recognized as a hero sign) The hairstyle favored by Karo tribe women is tightly cropped at the side, tied into bulbous knots, and dyed ochre on top. Men and women also make an incision below their bottom lip and insert a nail or piece of wood. The Karo tribe men are best known for the elaborate body painting they indulge in before important ceremonies. They paint their faces and bodies in white chalk and pierce their ears in five places.
Designs vary in content, from simple lines, dots, and shapes to animal motifs and handprints. Men use clay to create elaborate hairstyles and headdresses that signify status, beauty, and bravery. Male and female scarification also is a common practice both for its symbolism and aesthetic beauty.
They have cultural and linguistic commonalities with the Hamar Tribe and perform the cattle jumping ceremony for young Karo boys to pass into adulthood. They are a polygamous society consistent with the Hamar and the Banna but their marriage customs do not allow a young member of a family to marry before the elder.

KEY AFER IS CALLING THE WORLD To CELEBRATE ITS NEW YEAR!
YOU ARE WARMLY WELCOMED TO THE ENTRANCE
DOOR OF OMO VALLEY ETHIOPIA.
WE SAID MARO MARO MARO / HAPPY BENE /BANNA NEW YEAR!
We call for All Ethiopians and our friends all over the world to be part of aware new year celebration on DECEMBER 25,2023 Address -keyAfer Ethiopia!
What is Maro? And why we celebrate....
Maro New year means people are a people with their own traditional administrative structure. This traditional structure /King / as vice king has administrative structures that announce the year of fire and renewal. There are many structural administrations called Gudals, which is because Gudals are located in one or more villages per kebele. Although there are many cultural systems that this cultural structure tells the people, it is mainly . This first involves calling two elders from the village prior to the new year's farming season before performing the Maro ceremony. After the arrival of the elders, the kogo performs the operation of making a fire out of wood called sekaba/kogo/. The name of the fire that first produces this is called "Lopan Nuno". After igniting this fire, he extinguishes it, after which he gives three or more short rope knots to the elders, and according to those appointments, all the people will be gathered to Gudulu's house. Accordingly After the people have gathered, Gudlu takes the "kogo" or the sekaba, takes out the fire, blesses it and distributes it to all the people. The people take the new fire that was given to them from Gudl to their homes, clean the old fire from the ashes and take it outside without leaving any, and then bring the new fire into the house and light it. After this ceremony is completed, this is to indicate that the sowing season has arrived, so they first cover the Gudulu field with seeds and start sowing all their own seeds. After the harvest of the sown seeds, the people bring two ears of corn and two bunches of red sorghum to Gudulu's house. He gives the fire that he has taken out for roasting to the people, and the people return home with the fire and bring the new fire into the house. This is called "Gudlasa Tshan Nuno" which means Gudl's fire of fire.According to this, the people called Gudal eat and dry the leftovers from the grass that they brought with them, and after drying it, they prepare Borde or Farsi. After completing this process, an appointment will be made to gather at Goodal House to dance " " or Maro dance. According to this appointment, everyone will come to Goodal House with Borde / Farsi. The reason why Bane people dance this Maro dance is We have finished the year in peace and God will give us another good year . To celebrate this festival, the Bane people have their own calendar and calendar, so the Maron festival or ritual takes place from the month of December to January. The month of Bane's lunar calendar is the month of December, which means that the month of Bane is the day of the month when the moon rises. For example, when the moon rises in the west, there are one day, two days, and three days. If the moon sets in the east, one day and two days continue. According to this, the Bane month and day calendar is 25 days ahead of the country's, so December 25 is determined by the Bane calendar. / One is coming because the moon will be visible from the 14th, therefore, December 25/2023Bane Maro festival will be celebrated brightly. Various cultural events are held during the festival, among them the Iban Gadi (night dance) is performed by women and men dressed in traditional costumes in the city of key Afer.
